"Relatos Salvajes" is an audacious collection of short stories from Argentina (English captions) which garnered a ten-minute standing ovation at Cannes and was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. Written and directed by Damián Szifron (lots of Argentinian television), this starts with some memorable wildlife photography, shot with elegance and described by a playful voiceover. This sets the tone.

Rather than concentrate on the wonderful actors, I will instead give you hints about the unpredictable (and humorous) short stories; some are shorter (and darker) than others, but none leave you wondering about what happened. This is a refreshing change from many of the short stories we have seen or read. What a treat!

Darkly comic masterpiece.
"Wild Tales" earned a well-deserved Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign Film in 2014, and it would have been entirely deserving of top honors had it actually won.

Argentinian director Damien Szifron's film is a mix between the sensibilities of Pedro Almodovar, who served as a Producer on the film, and Quentin Tarantino's freewheeling style, which may have served as an inspiration. The movie contains six short films set in Argentina, primarily in and around Buenos Aires, that are united by (mostly) darkly comic revenge plots. Each of the films has an element of poetic justice, so even though the treatments can be pretty violent, there is an almost moral dimension to the action.

These films are also a master class in the subtle uses of sound and camera placement in the service of telling stories. There's a shift between the subjective viewpoint of some characters and the more "God's eye" view that happens multiple times within each of these stories...

A possessed car becomes a vehicle of revenge for teen
"Christine" is about possession. In adapting Steven King's novel to the screen, director John Carpenter and writer Bill Phillips streamline King's narrative to focus on the true star of the book and film--the car itself. "Christine" tells the story about a nerdy high school senior (Keith Gordon in a very strong performance)who can't do anything right but his best friend college jock Dennis(John Stockwell)seems to do everything right. So when Arnie finds the perfect car that he can rebuild and put his love into, the car nicknamed "Christine" by its former deceased owner more than returns that love--she gives Arnie a thug makeover and turns him into a monster as bad as the the kids that used to beat Arnie up. Needless to say, Christine has some special abilities of her own and she becomes--so to speak--the vehicle for Archie's revenge and vice versa.

This is really a love story but since it's based on a book by Stephen King you aleady know that the love is dark and dangerous. In every high school there are couple of kids who are treated badly by the tribe. Arnie Cunningham is a sweet, smart kid but the local bullies are making his life hell. He has two things going for him: his imagination and his best friend, Dennis, a genuinely nice kid who is on the football team and protects him. Arnie finds a Plymouth Fury and falls in love. The car's name is Christine and she's alive. No reason why, she just is. She talks to Arnie telepathicaly and through her radio. When she plays Johnny Ace's Pedging My Love and Arnie sighs and lays his head on her steering wheel the two are irrevocably wedded. The actor's voice changes whenver he's speaking to Christine, it becomes soft and affectionate. Her music, when they are alone is a playlist of love songs. It's and intense relationship.

Still Worth The 5 Stars.
I actually read the book first which made me expect more out of the movie, oh well. The movie, however, is still worth the 5 stars I've given it because John Carpenter directed the movie and it turned out excellent, the special effects are awesome, AND that the story itself is by Stephen King. Now anybody who has read the book knows what the movie is basically about, but for those who haven't ventured this way, let me elaborate. The key characters are Christine herself (keep in mind she's a car), Arnie Cunningham, who falls in love with Christine, and Dennis Guilder, who is a friend of Arnie but an enemy of Christine. Arnie falls in love with Christine and buys her from George LeBay (Roland LeBay in the book, George is the brother), who is an eccentric old man. Arnie fixes her up to almost brand new, but all the other characters (Dennis, Arnie's parents, Leah Cabot) have this disturbing sense that Christine is more than what she appears to be. Uncut version is worth the price!
I own both the US and international versions of this film, and the international edition is much better. Both versions carry a slight sexual tension throughout between Leon and Matilda, and the uncut version is more pronounced in this area, but that isn't the reason to buy it.
The extra 24 minutes on the uncut version provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between the two as the film progresses. For example, in the US version Matilda never becomes a real "cleaner" or hitman. It's only hinted at when they shoot a jogger from a rooftop with blanks. In the uncut version, Leon takes her completely under his wing and teaches her the trade, including scenes where the pair run around killing bad guys and such. In the process, Leon teaches her the "ring trick" by tossing a grenade at a victim and keeping the ring and grenade pin in his hand. This scene sets up the final scenes in the movie in a way that the US version left short and...
Beautiful Love Story and Action Packed Adventure
This is the story of Leon(Jean Reno), the highly efficient contract killer who's known as a cleaner due to his ability to kill you without you ever knowing he's there. Insidious Chapter 3, the latest installment of the highly acclaimed Insidious horror movies is, in my view, on par with the first Insidious movie, and leagues beyond the mediocre second installment Insidious Chapter 2. I don't know if it's because it was directed by Leigh Whannell, this film is actually his directorial debut by the way, which was really shocking for me to hear. It was almost as shocking as the movie itself, which is a genuine rarity among third installments and prequels, both for how genuinely terrifying and touching it is, but also how well it was written, acted, and directed. An uneven, but still decently creepy prequel
The four-year-old Insidious franchise continues with an uneven, but still entertaining and, at times, very creepy third entry. A prequel set a few years before the events of the prior films, the storyline turns on high-school student Quinn (Stefanie Scott), whose bid to contact the spirit of her deceased mother instead attracts the attention of a dangerous supernatural entity: an emaciated, slithering demon whose presence is announced by labored breathing and oily footprints. "We are all madmen for God"
When I first saw this film I was completely carried away with Francis Ford Coppola's dark and brooding presentation of the novel that created the modern vampire. The visual composition, the use of color as theme, and the music overloaded my senses to the point that I barely noted the movement of the plot. After all, I had read Stoker's tale often enough to recite it word for word. Why pay too much attention? Going back over the film 10 years later revealed much that I missed the first time.
Of course, the film really tries to capture the feeling of the book rather than be a literal copy, which may bother some aficionados. Coppola has chosen to gradually shift emphasis from a horror tale to the tragic story of an impossible love, without ever losing either thread. By shifting Dracula (Gary Oldman) back and forth from Rumanian hero to terrible monster, and allowing each persona to have its emotional context, he forces a foreboding dilemma on the viewer. Actually, I come down on this as James V. Hart's "Dracula"
"Bram Stoker's Dracula" or, more properly, "Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula"? The assumption was that the title was chosen to stake a claim to being the film adaptation closest to Bram Stoker's original gothic novel, but the reason was more mundane. Another studio had the rights to the title "Dracula," so a qualification was necessary. Since this 1992 horror film would have the same characters along with the same general plotline as the novel, this seemed reasonable enough. But screenwriter James V. Hart added a significant element to Stoker's novel that justified the movie's potent tagline, "Love Never Dies." As director, Francis Ford Coppola provides the stylistic flourishes, which are this movie's best parts, but Hart is the one who is responsible for the derivations.

For months people have been complaining about the visual quality of this particular Blu-Ray title. I'm a Blu-Ray enthusiast and I do enjoy this film so I wanted to find out for myself if all the attacks about it's visual quality had merit. Here are my thoughts...

I bought the Superbit Collection standard DVD of this movie and compared it to this Blu-Ray version. For me, it's a no-brainer, the Blu-Ray is superior. The Superbit version actually looks more garish and brighter than any version I've seen before, be it on TV or VHS. The overly bright colors give the movie a fantasy feel. Rarely did the night scenes in the castle look dark or disturbing. It was all very garish, color wise.

In this Blu-Ray version, Coppola's people, acting on his instructions, toned down the color scheme and made it darker, far more sinister and realistic. I enjoyed the look of the film very much. Those night scenes in the castle are eerie and dangerous in comparison to the overly bright...

Awesome collector's set

Awesome collector's set! The book inside is freaking cool and Chappie and Elysium are both mastered in 4k and look phenomenal. Also, the Amazon page does not specify that this set DOES come with the ultra violet digital copies of all three movies. I highly recommend if you are a fan of these movies.

Don't laugh, I'm being cool!

Saw it in theaters, had to get it on blu-ray. If you like Blomkamp this 3 in 1 is absolutely worth it. Nice factoid/art book about the three movies is included within the case.

Get exclusive content and packaging, but do it when prices are good enough
Neill Blomkamp took the sci-fi world by storm with his relatively low budget megahit District 9, and has since gone to make two more successful feature films. Neill's movies have a distinctive world-building style to them that has become his signature along with storytelling that often delves into social/political statements.
