There is an awful lot to like here.
As someone who purchased the entire nine seasons of "Matlock" separately about a year ago I can heartily recommend this brand new 2015 package to anyone who enjoys this type of family-oriented entertainment. It took me about six months but I got the opportunity to enjoy once again every single episode of this highly entertaining series. What I enjoyed most about this series is that there is a minimum of violence and very little in the way of sexual innuendo. This is definitely a series that grandparents can enjoy with their grandkids. I found that as the series wore on the quality of the shows did not diminish one little bit.....even in the ninth and final season. Andy Griffith obviously enjoyed the role and it was fun to see the great Don Knotts guest star in a number of episodes. Happy with my purchase!!

I love this series!!!! I was hesitant to purchase based on several other reviews about quality, I was especially afraid I would not be able to hear shows since I do have a slight hearing problem. I have a 32" flat screen TV and a 2yr old bluray/ dvd player that are both pretty basic with no fancy upgrades. I'm almost finished with first season and have been VERY happy. Do I wish they would have cleaned up the video a bit for this new set release?? YES... Am I still enjoying this series?? ABSOLUTELY... I have no problem with audio from my regular TV speakers. I am very happy with my purchase so far and would definitely recommend this set.

good show!
I must say that it is great to now own the ITV restorations on blu ray. I purchased the previous DVD set for about the same price as this set. It, too, featured the restored transfers, albeit in SD.

That being said, these are the exact same transfers, just presented in the high definition they were originally mastered in. As other posters have mentioned, these same transfers have been issued on BD already in other countries.

ADVENTURES and RETURN are each presented over 3 platters, with CASEBOOK, MEMOIRS, and FEATURE FILM COLLECTION over 2 platters each. All of the bonus content is exactly the same as on the DVD set, right down to the booklet authored by Richard Valley.

The only negative I can mention about the set (and granted, a minor quibble) refers to the cheapness of the packaging. Instead of the nice sturdy box used for the DVD set, MPI have opted for a faux texture resembling that box. The problem is, it's a cheap thin cardboard sleeve...
Quality Holmes with both excellent video and audio; a treasure!

I see that there are quite a few lesser reviews of this Blu-ray set but I personally think the sound and image quality are wonderful for these episodes being as old as they are (at least in the two episodes I have watched so far.) I have noticed quite a bit of detail that I never noted in my old DVDs which makes my appreciate how well done this series in terms of authenticity and dedication to the appearance of 19th century Victorian London. In short, the episodes I viewed looked great. And of course, Mr. Brett's portrayal of Holmes will always be the gold standard for me and I even use his image in picturing Holmes when reading Conan Doyle's original canon or a pastiche. To summarize, I can not recommend this set enough.

Fantastic

This series is a flat out masterpiece. The Blu-ray edition is mind blowing. Yes, the resolution and clarity are so great that occasionally you are aware of the make-up on some of the actors. Especially Brett, in the later episodes. However, you are also aware of how beautifully interiors are lit. How the sunshine fills a room. You hear and see a rain storm outside his window, seemingly for the first time. There are nuances in exterior shots that reach out and grab you. In short, you are transported to the time and place like never before. The acting by everyone involved is mesmerizing. What a triumph!

After watching (genuinely, truly, and fully) the final series (all of the episodes), what a fitting tribute this is to the world's most famous detective. David Suchet is the quintessential Poirot. This final series culminates in "Curtain," Poirot's final case, and well done, it is. And as icing on this genre's cake, Capt. Hastings, Inspector Japp, and Miss Lemon join in in the valedictory. For Poirot followers, this is a remarkable--and memorable--exit. Viva la Poirot!

For me David Suchet is the very personification of Hercule Poirot a bit foppish and festitous but always totally lovable. David Suchet has amassed a truly astonishing body of work in the many Poirot Series installments and while ALL installments are good most episodes are great and no David Suchet Poirot episode has ever fallen flat in my opinion. I preordered these Agatha Christie's Poirot, Series 12 and Agatha Christie's Poirot, Series 13 DVD's because David Suchet as Hercule Poirot on DVD has NEVER EVER DISAPPOINTED ME!

It appears these final DVD's will be the best production values allowing our dear Hercule to go out on the high note. In show business it is said that one should always leave us wanting more. I want MORE David Suchet as Hercule Poirot but fully understand David's desire to close this chapter of life and move on. I just want to thank David Suchet and all that have worked to bring us Hercule Poirot DVD's over the years.

London's Only "Consulting Detective."
In his foreword to Bantam's "Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories," Loren Estleman called the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson literature's warmest, most symbiotic and most timeless: rightfully so. Not surprisingly, film history is littered with adaptations of Conan Doyle's tales and Holmes pastiches (using the protagonists but otherwise independent storylines). Yet - and I'm saying this with particular apologies to the fans of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce canon - none of these prior incarnations can hold a candle to the ITV/Granada TV series produced between 1984 and 1994, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes and first David Burke, then, beginning with the second ("Return of Sherlock Holmes") cycle and in near-seamless transition, Edward Hardwicke as a refreshingly sturdy, pragmatic, unbumbling Dr. Watson.

Jeremy Brett was the only actor who ever managed to perfectly portray Holmes's imperiousness, bitingly ironic sense of humor and apparently...

To a great number of Sherlockians--or Holmesians, if you prefer--Jeremy Brett's performance as the world's first consulting detective was the definitive portrayal. And while this series has its flaws and deviations from the original text, it is still arguably the best filmic representation available.

I have seen the original MPI releases, as well as a Japanese/Chinese collection, and without question, this new set features the best picture and sound quality. (Perhaps the PAL version released a couple years earlier in the UK is slightly superior, but I doubt anyone could really see the difference.) The uniform menu screens and the sharp design of the packaging are also an improvement upon previous releases.

My complaints are few and rather inconsequential, but they are as follows:
1) There are no additional special features, but in fact *fewer* special features than the original DVD releases.
2) The pictures on the faces of the DVDs were chosen...
Jeremy Brett was the Definitive Sherlock Holmes
This review has been updated on Sept. 18. I received my Sherlock Holmes set from MPI today and as I hoped, it looks and sounds FANTASTIC! I already have watched a lot from the set. You won't be disappointed! I have been sending e-mails for a few years now to MPI Home Video, asking that they remaster this series and make it available on DVD. I am so glad they finally have. Two episodes in their original release of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," notably "The Dancing Men" and "The Naval Treaty," had audio problems in some of the soundtrack music. They have remastered this series from the original Granada tapes in England. This resulted in an awesome picture and sound quality. Thank you MPI! What more can be said about Jeremy Brett? Many people, including myself, consider him to be the definitive Sherlock Holmes. This has made all of us "Dark Shadows" fans extremely happy, especially those of us that haven't yet purchased any DVD sets of the series. All 1225 episodes from the ABC network daytime run (1966-1971) are available along with a slew of bonuses including interviews with series creator Dan Curtis and various stars of the soap.

Luckily for the show's fans all episodes of this soap opera exist except one (#1219) which is the "lost show" episode. However, the audio of that episode has been found by a...

I am so beyond thrilled with this collection, but furious at how Amazon shipped it. I too watched the series in the 60's-70's. Unlike those who rushed home from school to watch, I rushed from elementary school to the neighboring nursery/pre-school I previously attended to watch (the Catholic nuns who ran the school watched it!). I had to wait there for my parents to pick me up after work (was 6 when the series began). They still remember if they arrived before 4:30, they would HAVE TO sit in the car to wait for DS to be over.

Anyway, my mother pre-ordered the collection for me, it arrived on April 11. Unfortunately she tried to make it even more special by having it "gift wrapped". What a joke! Amazon removed the coffin from its plastic bag, placed it in an UGLY blue canvas tote bag (THAT was the gift wrap), discarded all of the perfect original packaging. Uncut version is worth the price!
I own both the US and international versions of this film, and the international edition is much better. Both versions carry a slight sexual tension throughout between Leon and Matilda, and the uncut version is more pronounced in this area, but that isn't the reason to buy it.
The extra 24 minutes on the uncut version provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between the two as the film progresses. For example, in the US version Matilda never becomes a real "cleaner" or hitman. It's only hinted at when they shoot a jogger from a rooftop with blanks. In the uncut version, Leon takes her completely under his wing and teaches her the trade, including scenes where the pair run around killing bad guys and such. In the process, Leon teaches her the "ring trick" by tossing a grenade at a victim and keeping the ring and grenade pin in his hand. This scene sets up the final scenes in the movie in a way that the US version left short and...

This has made all of us "Dark Shadows" fans extremely happy, especially those of us that haven't yet purchased any DVD sets of the series. All 1225 episodes from the ABC network daytime run (1966-1971) are available along with a slew of bonuses including interviews with series creator Dan Curtis and various stars of the soap.

DO NOT GET IT GIFT WRAPPED!
I am so beyond thrilled with this collection, but furious at how Amazon shipped it. I too watched the series in the 60's-70's. Unlike those who rushed home from school to watch, I rushed from elementary school to the neighboring nursery/pre-school I previously attended to watch (the Catholic nuns who ran the school watched it!). I had to wait there for my parents to pick me up after work (was 6 when the series began). They still remember if they arrived before 4:30, they would HAVE TO sit in the car to wait for DS to be over.

Anyway, my mother pre-ordered the collection for me, it arrived on April 11. Unfortunately she tried to make it even more special by having it "gift wrapped". What a joke! I have seen the entire series many times and starting when it was first on TV many years ago. To say that I love this TV series would be a major understatement. There is just something about it that makes me want to see it again and again. Maybe because it mentally transports me back to a time when I was a kid at home after school, a time before my parents were deceased, a time when all seemed right in the world and the scariest thing about life was Barnabas and Angelique in Dark Shadows.

It contains all 27 episodes in the six seasons of Inspector Lewis including the original pilot. Do not be misled by the Amazon description which at the time of writing states a running time of 430 minutes - I presume it will be corrected in due course. In fact these 14 discs run to no less than 2,430 minutes, which is enough to keep us all absorbed for some time! Most importantly these are stated to be the full length UK edition - there has been much criticism of cuts made for the North American releases of some of the Lewis DVD sets in the past.

It is hard to believe that the pilot show was broadcast as recently as 2006, as it seems that Inspector Lewis has been part of our viewing lives for so much longer. I think this is to a large extent, because the character of Lewis first appeared in Morse as long ago as 1986 and has been played by Kevin Whately...

Quirky but wonderful show in an excellent box set
I bought Warehouse 13 as a chance because my partner and I had enjoyed Eureka, but where I found Eureka rather quickly got stale and formulaic, this show just grew with passion and entertainment. Initially I did not gel with the two main characters and I found Pete to be irritating and Myka rather dull, however with the development of the series I really grew to love them. However the real stars of this show are the wonderful and brooding Saul Rubinek who plays the part of Artie as if it were himself and I loved him for this. The other real shining light here is of course Allison Scagliotti playing Claudia, whose mildly acidic and humorous dialogue was so beautifully written. Also worthy of note is the gentle character Steve played by Aaron Ashmore, who does a great job of playing a young gay man with out resorting to being camp or stereotypically pathetic. It is so nice to have a good gay character in a show like this and the jokes about his sexuality are insightful and amusing...
and series cancelled before their time do a very poor job of wrapping up

Stumbled onto a flaky series with an outlandish premise and marginally bearable characters. By the end of episode 4, it was our default viewing choice. The streaming service elected not to carry Season Five in a timely manner, so we bought the set. Usually commentary adds nothing to the viewing pleasure, and series cancelled before their time do a very poor job of wrapping up. Neither, I'm happy to say, holds true in this case. It's cheaper to buy the seasons one at a time; it's also cheaper to go to a theme park and only ride one attraction. The package is worth the extra money.

Five Star DVD set!

Warehouse 13 is one of those TV series that don't make as much sense if you miss episodes. It has a definite beginning, a long list of story lines which thread together to make a linear tapestry, a great ending and a very touching closure. So it must be taken as a whole.

We watched every original episode in order, stretched out over what seemed like endless years, but by the time we bought this DVD set a lot of the early detail was blurry. The DVDs have the advantage of allowing the viewer to self pace their watching, backtrack for details and take in the series as a freshly coherent experience.

These DVDs play well, have no problems loading and have abundant bonus material, including commentary for a number of the episodes. I did find a broken hyperlink to a 'more' section on one of them and had to flip through the scenes from the 'play all' link to get to the next show but that was a minor glitch.

Not a boxed set. The individually shrink-wrapped season packs are banded into one giant bundle and shrink-wrapped overall. (A lot of work to get it all unwrapped.)

Doesn't appear to include the bonus material that is part of the 4-disc "50th Anniversary Edition" sampler package. (The Anniversary Edition is inexpensive - and well worth buying for the test scenes alone. The contrast between William Hopper and Raymond Burr, each testing as Perry Mason is very interesting. Burr had already completely worked out the subtle character of Perry Mason. Burr as Hamilton Burger just didn't have the edge. No tests of Barbara Hale or William Talman.)

The order of the episodes on the discs is apparently the order in which the episodes were filmed, which does not always match the order of first broadcast given in the IMDB and in the Wikipedia episode list. This explains why sometimes the...

Why the change from a 1-star review to a 5-star review? A number of things...

1) On "Cyber Monday" the price for the "Complete Season Bundle" dropped from $398.93 down to $203.99. This is the lowest price I have seen, although in a comment on my first review, Kermsroomy said that on November 7th, 2013 "It was $198.49 on a six hour lightning deal earlier today."

2) D. Moore, in another comment on my first review was helpful. He indicated that although the entire bundle is shrink-wrapped the individuals season are still sealed in individually shrink-wrapped DVD cases. If you read my original review below, you will see (as I required...

Holy cow there's 270 of them!! Turns out a bunch of these episodes have never been released for syndication either so they only showed the episode during their original tv airing...also there's apparently an episode where Perry technically loses a case...

Anyway I knew i had to buy all of them.. I figure at my rate it's going to take me a good year to watch them all (or more..). Some are quirky...some are very dated...(50's...times were...really different back then haha..and what about women's bras back there holy cow talk about pointed..) but for cold winter nights or not much going on and I feel like watching Perry Mason? I got it covered...

If you go by mystery TV shows, then just about every city or town in America and the UK has elaborately-murdered corpses cropping up all over the place.

So why should New Zealand be denied the fun? Hence we get "The Brokenwood Mysteries," which focuses on a pleasant little down in the land of the long white cloud that just happens to have a number of mysterious corpses. While the first season of this series isn't dramatically different from other shows like "Midsomer Murders," it has a pleasantly languid air and a quirky side that sets it apart.

In "Blood and Water," Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) is sent to the rural town of Brokenwood to investigate an alcoholic farmer found dead in the river. Since the dead man was commonly considered to be an abusive beast who probably murdered his own wife, everyone assumes that he simply committed suicide... but Shepherd isn't convinced. As he digs deeper into the town's ugly little...

I'm a huge fan of what are called "procedural crime shows", where a crime is committed and you watch the detective (or police officer) solve the crime by putting the pieces together. Some of the best are those produced for British, Australian or Canadian TV. This may be the first one from New Zealand that I've seen. It snuck up on my and I was hooked.

If you've read my other "TV mystery" reviews, you know that I do not believe in "spoilers" so you won't find any in this review and I'll try to provide info that will help you decide if the show is for you, but not spoil any of the enjoyment. (After all, it wouldn't be a "mystery" then, would it?)
The series aired in New Zealand in 2014 and may, or may not, have had commercials. Each of the four episodes runs from 91 to 95 minutes and each is on a separate DVD. Each story uses the same format: A murder is committed in the opening moments and nearly always has at least three obvious...
Charming, not brilliant.

This is a perfectly charming, though not brilliant, police procedural. The lead detective is quirky, the pretty girl sergeant is smart and not a bit afraid of her boss. The locale is New Zealand, so don't expect to understand a word they say without captioning, as the New Zealand accent is unique and absolutely not a bit OZ-like. (Well, maybe a bit.) The point is, it is a lot of fun, well made, interesting characters, interesting crimes. More "Midsommer Murders" than "Foyle's War," but that ain't a bad thing. Watch it.

Love this set!
Received my "Murder, She Wrote: The Complete Series" yesterday. I love this set! I was one of those people who purchased all of the individual sets as they came out but I knew if there was ever a day where a complete set came out I'd get it. The series itself is timeless. I used to watch this series with my Grandmother back when it originally aired on CBS. I loved it then and I love it now!

As for the Complete set itself. It's beautifully put together. All 12 seasons are up together in a box that is just the right size for my book shelves. The box set has the slimmer DVD packages rather than the bulky sets when the series was originally put out on DVD. One thing I really like is that there are no double sided DVD's in this set! This is a major improvement from the first 3 seasons put out years ago where they were double sided and I would have some digital issues from time to time with those sets. So again...I love this set!!!

Some have complained about the movies...
WOW! - Over 212 straight hours of Murders on DVD . . . . .
Just think, if you ever sat down and watched each one of these 264 episodes end-to-end for 24 hours a day, it would take over 8 and half days to watch the entire series that ran for 12 seasons on TV (from 1984 to 1996). Since I think at least one murder occurred in every episode, that's one a heck of a lot of murders. I was always amazed that every place Jessica ever went, another murder occurred, and many of them right there in her own small town of Cabot Cove, Maine. That place must have been the murder capital of the world. I certainly wouldn't want to be around Jessica for very long or I just might have turned up dead. Even though this TV series is still on TV in reruns, we still watch it every day it's on. We truly love it. I'm sure we've probably seen every episode numerous times but we still enjoy watching each one of them. We already own every one of the 12 individual sets, but it's interesting to see it re-released as one complete set (but I guess without the 4 extra movies)...

This set is fantastic. This is one of the best examples of classic procedural television that I can think of. This complete set is exactly what you want if you are a fan of the series.

Discs

This set itself contains only the single sided discs. This is fantastic if you consider the fact that many movies/shows suffer from poorly created double sided discs.

The entire set has 63 discs containing 263 episodes. That is quite a lot of crime solving

Packaging

This packaging is very slim. The entire set takes up about as much space as the first four individual seasons.

If you are in the market for some Angela Landsbury goodness then you should consider your options. If you have none of the previous seasons then you probably want this complete set. Buyer beware! I received my set from Amazon on May 5, 2015, and am sending it back. This set contains the replacement Mark Heyes music from the original DVD sets prior to the release of "The Most Wanted Edition" box set. That is, much of the original series music has been removed, particularly in seasons 2 and 3, and replaced with a synthesized score. I cannot believe that after what the fans went through with previous DVD sets, and the painstaking work CBS put into "The Most Wanted Edition" to right their wrongs over this music issue, that they would release this garbage now. Thanks to Mr Rubin for clarifying whether this was the release that was claimed on several dvd release sites.

It was SUPPOSEDLY to be a reissued edition of the REVISED "most wanted edition" issued in a budgeted slip case version 7" deep. The only omission was to be the extra CD issued out in the first REVISED issue (since the original production RUIN (*not a typo) had included several faulty and mislabeled discs.

It's an embarrassment to PARAMOUNT to issue this great series in a format and content that is incomplete WITHOUT advising the consumer.

In fact. All previous PR had been to the effect that this was to be the RESUSCITATED and COMPLETE version that had been a result of a consumer backlash against the company for its faulty first run.

I'd been watching this item for 2 months, hesitating to purchase the THREE sets I'd intended to order (self, friend, old fogie) but now I'll have to look for alternate routes or possibly...

There have been reports of people getting this box set who are now claiming it to be 100% night-of-broadcast, the way it was supposed to be. That would indicate that CBS/Paramount has indeed corrected the earlier errors and the sets that are now selling should be OK. But just in case you get one of the first-issued boxes, keep that phone number handy so that they can get you the corrected discs in one form or another. Early purchasers were treated to the MOST WANTED box set. The product, THE FUGITIVE TV series, is among the finest dramatic series ever produced for television, and purchasers deserve the best possible way to view it.

When I first saw this film I was completely carried away with Francis Ford Coppola's dark and brooding presentation of the novel that created the modern vampire. The visual composition, the use of color as theme, and the music overloaded my senses to the point that I barely noted the movement of the plot. After all, I had read Stoker's tale often enough to recite it word for word. Why pay too much attention? Going back over the film 10 years later revealed much that I missed the first time.
Of course, the film really tries to capture the feeling of the book rather than be a literal copy, which may bother some aficionados. Coppola has chosen to gradually shift emphasis from a horror tale to the tragic story of an impossible love, without ever losing either thread. By shifting Dracula (Gary Oldman) back and forth from Rumanian hero to terrible monster, and allowing each persona to have its emotional context, he forces a foreboding dilemma on the viewer. Dialog and narration...
Actually, I come down on this as James V. Hart's "Dracula"
"Bram Stoker's Dracula" or, more properly, "Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula"? The assumption was that the title was chosen to stake a claim to being the film adaptation closest to Bram Stoker's original gothic novel, but the reason was more mundane. Another studio had the rights to the title "Dracula," so a qualification was necessary. Since this 1992 horror film would have the same characters along with the same general plotline as the novel, this seemed reasonable enough. But screenwriter James V. Hart added a significant element to Stoker's novel that justified the movie's potent tagline, "Love Never Dies." As director, Francis Ford Coppola provides the stylistic flourishes, which are this movie's best parts, but Hart is the one who is responsible for the derivations.

Bram Stoker's Dracula : ( Blu-Ray Review ) Stop the Blu-Ray Hate!
For months people have been complaining about the visual quality of this particular Blu-Ray title. I'm a Blu-Ray enthusiast and I do enjoy this film so I wanted to find out for myself if all the attacks about it's visual quality had merit. Here are my thoughts...

I bought the Superbit Collection standard DVD of this movie and compared it to this Blu-Ray version. For me, it's a no-brainer, the Blu-Ray is superior. The Superbit version actually looks more garish and brighter than any version I've seen before, be it on TV or VHS. The overly bright colors give the movie a fantasy feel. Rarely did the night scenes in the castle look dark or disturbing. It was all very garish, color wise.

In this Blu-Ray version, Coppola's people, acting on his instructions, toned down the color scheme and made it darker, far more sinister and realistic. I enjoyed the look of the film very much. Those night scenes in the castle are eerie and dangerous in comparison to the overly bright...
