good show!
I must say that it is great to now own the ITV restorations on blu ray. I purchased the previous DVD set for about the same price as this set. It, too, featured the restored transfers, albeit in SD.

That being said, these are the exact same transfers, just presented in the high definition they were originally mastered in. As other posters have mentioned, these same transfers have been issued on BD already in other countries.

ADVENTURES and RETURN are each presented over 3 platters, with CASEBOOK, MEMOIRS, and FEATURE FILM COLLECTION over 2 platters each. All of the bonus content is exactly the same as on the DVD set, right down to the booklet authored by Richard Valley.

The only negative I can mention about the set (and granted, a minor quibble) refers to the cheapness of the packaging. Instead of the nice sturdy box used for the DVD set, MPI have opted for a faux texture resembling that box. The problem is, it's a cheap thin cardboard sleeve...
Quality Holmes with both excellent video and audio; a treasure!

I see that there are quite a few lesser reviews of this Blu-ray set but I personally think the sound and image quality are wonderful for these episodes being as old as they are (at least in the two episodes I have watched so far.) I have noticed quite a bit of detail that I never noted in my old DVDs which makes my appreciate how well done this series in terms of authenticity and dedication to the appearance of 19th century Victorian London. In short, the episodes I viewed looked great. And of course, Mr. Brett's portrayal of Holmes will always be the gold standard for me and I even use his image in picturing Holmes when reading Conan Doyle's original canon or a pastiche. To summarize, I can not recommend this set enough.

Fantastic

This series is a flat out masterpiece. The Blu-ray edition is mind blowing. Yes, the resolution and clarity are so great that occasionally you are aware of the make-up on some of the actors. Especially Brett, in the later episodes. However, you are also aware of how beautifully interiors are lit. How the sunshine fills a room. You hear and see a rain storm outside his window, seemingly for the first time. There are nuances in exterior shots that reach out and grab you. In short, you are transported to the time and place like never before. The acting by everyone involved is mesmerizing. What a triumph!

MPI Home Video has made a terrific decision here, combining all of its previously released DVD boxed sets of this classic 14-film series into one affordable package. It is a must buy for any Sherlock Holmes fan, or anyone who enjoys classic mysteries, who does not already have all of these wonderful films.

When these were first released on DVD it was truly a cause for celebration, as it represented the completed painstaking restoration of all 14 classic films by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

The UCLA Theatre Archives did an award-winning job in restoring and thus preserving these great films from 35mm master copies into the digital format, sometimes literally being forced to piece together the celluloid remnants that they found.

It took the archivists several years to complete the entire project, but was well worth the wait. The result is that the black and white images seem as fresh today as when the films were released to theatres more than 40...

London's Only "Consulting Detective."
In his foreword to Bantam's "Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories," Loren Estleman called the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson literature's warmest, most symbiotic and most timeless: rightfully so. Not surprisingly, film history is littered with adaptations of Conan Doyle's tales and Holmes pastiches (using the protagonists but otherwise independent storylines). Yet - and I'm saying this with particular apologies to the fans of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce canon - none of these prior incarnations can hold a candle to the ITV/Granada TV series produced between 1984 and 1994, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes and first David Burke, then, beginning with the second ("Return of Sherlock Holmes") cycle and in near-seamless transition, Edward Hardwicke as a refreshingly sturdy, pragmatic, unbumbling Dr. Watson.

Jeremy Brett was the only actor who ever managed to perfectly portray Holmes's imperiousness, bitingly ironic sense of humor and apparently...
They should have replaced the "as" with "is"
To a great number of Sherlockians--or Holmesians, if you prefer--Jeremy Brett's performance as the world's first consulting detective was the definitive portrayal. And while this series has its flaws and deviations from the original text, it is still arguably the best filmic representation available.

I have seen the original MPI releases, as well as a Japanese/Chinese collection, and without question, this new set features the best picture and sound quality. (Perhaps the PAL version released a couple years earlier in the UK is slightly superior, but I doubt anyone could really see the difference.) The uniform menu screens and the sharp design of the packaging are also an improvement upon previous releases.

My complaints are few and rather inconsequential, but they are as follows:
1) There are no additional special features, but in fact *fewer* special features than the original DVD releases.
2) The pictures on the faces of the DVDs were chosen...
Jeremy Brett was the Definitive Sherlock Holmes
This review has been updated on Sept. 18. I received my Sherlock Holmes set from MPI today and as I hoped, it looks and sounds FANTASTIC! I already have watched a lot from the set. You won't be disappointed! I have been sending e-mails for a few years now to MPI Home Video, asking that they remaster this series and make it available on DVD. I am so glad they finally have. Two episodes in their original release of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," notably "The Dancing Men" and "The Naval Treaty," had audio problems in some of the soundtrack music. They have remastered this series from the original Granada tapes in England. This resulted in an awesome picture and sound quality. Thank you MPI! What more can be said about Jeremy Brett? Many people, including myself, consider him to be the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Such was the ego-stroking the cast & creators received for their first series of SHERLOCK, they couldn't help but gain huge confidence as they try to top themselves in Series 2. Steven Moffat always did have roaring self-esteem, and so he and co-creator Mark Gattis shrugged and decided to take on the three most iconic touchstones in the Sherlock Holmes canon. Series 2 is a (mostly) brilliant reworking of, in Moffat's own words, "the Hound, the Woman, and the Professor."

It was a ba11sy move to reimagine Sherlock Holmes in 21st Century England. That it worked tremendously is due to smart writing and the amazing chemistry between the two leads, Cumberbatch and Freeman. The writers inserted clever touches such as the onscreen texts which reveal Holmes' instantaneous deductions and his ready application of contemporary tools (cell phones, the Internet, etc.) to aid his investigations. From Good to Great
As I watched the first season of "Sherlock," my fondness for this show increased. From the opening moments in "A Study in Pink" to the Moriarty's stunning entrance in "The Great Game," I knew I was witnessing the rebirth of an icon. Yes, Mr. Downing Jr.'s portrayal in Hollywood's version is admirable and entertaining, but to find the true spirit of Sherlock Holmes one need look no further than this series. However, to say that it was ever more than "darn good television" would have been pushing it. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman put on a fantastic show, and ever so often the writing and acting gave small glimmers of greatness, but I was never tempted to say that the show had achieved lasting greatness (though to successfully transpose Holmes into the modern age was a feat in and of itself).

However, with "The Reichenbach Fall," I'm pleased to say that Sherlock has left far behind casual crime drama (good drama though it was) and has now entered the realm of true,...

Part of the fun of Jeremy Brett's Holmes (and Agatha Christie's Poirot) came from the period details, so this update takes a little getting used to--as does the occasional mumbled line--but Cumberbatch and Freeman share an enjoyable Odd Couple rapport, marked by flashes of deadpan wit, which compensates for the absence of deerstalker caps (Holmes favors scarves) and journals (Watson maintains a website). Intelligent, updated and engaging man for all ages
Sherlock Holmes....makes brainy sexy. Sure he's a self described "high functioning sociopath", with no people skills; but he's brilliant, driven and dresses wonderfully. Dr. John Watson is not a patsy (not a sidekick - he's a partner); sharp, wry, worldly man of action who tolerates Sherlock's idiosyncrasies because he misses the adrenaline edge of combat and seeks meaning in a life after war. They are evenly matched although Sherlock draws the attention and enmity of their foes - Watson is a good second.

The writing is engaging, cheeky, smart and fast paced. It rolls current technology into the stream of consciousness. The looks of awe when Sherlock figures it out - and his amusement when he learns he's alone are priceless. The cinematography, costumes, lighting and use of text overlays to move the story along are well placed and impressive on their own.

But the intelligence of the show is its presumption in the interest of the watcher; therefore moving...

As a big fan of the original stories and of the 80's Granada show with Jeremy Brett I was expecting to be disappointed by this show. I wasn't! Though it has been transplanted to modern day London it has kept the spirit of the books, and the casting is superb, especially the lead actor who plays the cold, calculated Holmes to perfection.

It's not an easy task to move this concept into a modern day setting given the advances in forensic science since the stories were first published, but focusing on Holmes' acute intelligence, observation and deduction it still gives that sense of awe that makes you feel like you're waking around with your eyes shut.

Don't hesitate... buy or rent this today if you love Holmes!

Did We Really Need Another Sherlock Holmes? A Jaded Fan Gives An Unequivocal "YES!"
I needed another adaptation featuring Sherlock Holmes about as much as I needed a full frontal lobotomy. Don't get me wrong--I love Holmes. As a boy, I read every story. Through the years, I've seen so many versions of Sherlock that I can't even begin to enumerate them all. I knew things looked bleak when everyone raved about last year's Guy Richie version and I found it only slightly amusing and greatly overproduced. I patently refused to accept this new BBC adaptation and refused to watch it--but I relented (I'm so weak willed) and now, hat in hand, I repent. This glorious updating is fast, smart, and riveting entertainment. What an idiot I would have been to miss it!

Get Sherlock!
You likely know about Sherlock already, so there's little point of reviewing it here. This set contains the first three seasons of Sherlock on both DVD and Blu-Ray, along with a bonus disc of special features (mainly specific to Season 3), which is also offered on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

Each season comes packaged in a 4-disc case, containing two Blu-Ray discs and two DVDs each. The cases are thicker than the individual release to house all four discs securely, and the cover art has been altered with a "Blu-Ray + DVD" banner added to the front.

Seasons 1 and 2 are identical to the their original video releases. All three episodes and all the bonus features are included. Season 3 is not the same as both discs have been reauthored to include new content: the Season 3 prequel is now on disc 1 and the first and last episodes have audio commentaries added to them. Again, all content is the same on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

Absolutely amazing
I pre-ordered this not long ago, here on Amazon. I originally had planned to purchase this limited edition box set from the BBC website, but even the pre-order option for them was $50 more expensive than the one here on Amazon, which I got for $136!

Anyways, the package arrived today and I am just amazed.
The box was very carefully packed and padded to prevent damage, even being inside of a bigger box for further protection, and when I finally got to the product I was astounded.

The box itself is gorgeous, with the Sherlock and John silhouette cut windows looking inside.

The busts are amazing and sturdy with really well done details and features. I have them up on display already.
The art cards are beautiful as well, and come together in a nice envelope. Amazing work!

As for the Bluray/DVD cases, they are all very nice with the discs stored neatly inside. Let's not forget the bonus discs either, including deleted scenes, bloopers,...

Seasons one and two are region 2. Season 3 is the only region free season. Very upsetting. Buyer beware. Amazon correct it in description.
