A truly powerful movie
I really underestimated this movie. I was not inclined to rent it, but I'm glad I did. The acting was superb; Hanks definitely gave an Oscar worthy performance, and the pirate captain was very convincing in his mixed emotions as things didn't go as planned. The script was riveting, leaving me at the edge of my seat the entire time.

Apparently, some of those who gave the movie only one star due to their perception of a ridiculous premise -- an unarmed crew with the captain shooting flares at the pirates -- don't realize the movie was based on actual events, that this was how the captain tried to defend his ship.

I also liked the fact that the piracy of an impoverished nation stemmed largely from the fact that fishing conglomerates had wiped out the fishing industry of Somalia, an important reminder of the damage our industries often impose on the economies
of other countries.

Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely, a truly worthy movie in terms...
Phenomenal
One word, "Phenomenal" I could literally stop this review right there! I was invited to the first screening of the movie in Tampa and after having watched the trailer I knew for sure this was a movie I didn't want to miss. I accepted the invite and printed my tickets and informed friends of the screening so they could get theirs and then we waited for the day to arrive. A Hard-Hitting, Gritty, Emotional Family Crime Thriller with Plenty of Heart and Raw Action
This was by far one of the few movies I've seen in recent months that I absolutely enjoyed every minute of in theaters - to my utmost surprise. It is Liam Neeson's best action movie in a very long time - and blows the socks off any of the garbage "Taken 2/3" Hollywood cash-grab sequels that are purely for money. Yes this does have some awesome action/chase/fight scenes, but at heart this is definitely not a "Taken" film - this is a hard-hitting raw family drama similar to Warrior with all the grit and raw street-ugliness of NARC (and then some). It's a mile-a-minute thrill ride shot brilliantly and has plenty of heart. You really do feel like you are watching these characters and this world Run All Night. Tone-wise, this film is perfect and I couldn't have asked for a more appropriate and darker-looking treatment. The cinematography, the film palette, the raw look and feel just made this all the more serious to watch - excellent. Acting was stellar and relationships...
An effective, old-school action flick imbued with intelligence
Theatrical review. There may be spoilers. While aging movie stars making action movies is nothing new, perhaps no one has been more visible than 62 year old Liam Neeson ("Taken" trilogy, "A Walk Among the Tombstones," "Non-Stop," "Unknown" and others). Here Neeson reunites with director Jaume Collet-Serra ("Non-Stop" and "Unknown) in what may be his best yet.

Neeson plays Jimmy Conlon, a broken-down, drunken hit man for Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris) the head of a NYC mob faction. Maguire, while still shady, is trying to go a bit legit. Jimmy isn't getting anything to do, but his old buddy Shawn feels sorry for him so throws him a bone now and then. Shawn's son Danny (Boyd Holbrook, who also worked with Neeson in "A Walk Among the Tombstones"), is still wanting to do some serious crime and invites some Albanian heroin traffickers to meet with dear old dad in order to pave the way for the drugs being introduced to the city pipeline. But Shawn wants no part of the drug...

Run All Night (2015) is a non-stop-action drama along the lines of Cold in July (2014) meets any of the action packed Liam Neeson films like: Taken trilogy, Non-Stop (2014), or Unknown (2011). Together with A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) this must be my favorite film with Neeson to this day. I did like him in Unknown (2011), the original Taken (2008), The Grey (2011), and in the Five Minutes of Heaven (2009), but it is with the character of Jimmy Conlon at the age of 63 that Neeson made the biggest impression on me so far. In the film, Neeson portrays an over-the-hill ex-trigger man for an Irish-American mobster gone legit played by Ed Harris (something similar Harris played in the film History of Violence in 2005). Conlon is a washed-up alcoholic with no real friends and money, who keeps hanging around Shawn McGuire (Harris) and his family, because his own son does not want to know him. But when certain unforeseen circumstances occur, and Conlon's son becomes unintentionally...

Wait Until You See the Car
I won't be cliche and tell you that your mission, should you choose to accept it... You know the rest.

Without a doubt, this is the best of all the Mission Impossible movies, including the original. Over the years, the MI franchise had become something of a cartoon of itself. So, it seemed appropriate that Brad Bird should be chosen to helm MI4 Ghost Protocol. As the Oscar winning director of the Incredibles, he made animated cartoons seem very real. Now, he's made Mission Impossible real again. He's injected a fresh breathe of confidence, humor and camaraderie into a series that sorely needed it. He's not only re-invigorated the franchise, he's re-invigorated Tom Cruise's career as an action star. With this movie, Tom is back on top.

UPDATED FOR BLU-RAY:

A couple of things about the Blu-ray edition 1) Paramount has done a stunning transfer with nice depth, clarity and detail. Skin tones look quite nice as do textures. The audio is VERY active with a great losslss 7.1 mix.

Be aware however that the sequences shot in IMAX format are NOT presented in the wider aspect ratio for the film (unlike, say, "The Dark Knight"). Also this includes a code for a Ultraviolet "copy" which means you'll have to stream the film rather than upload it to your portable device. There's also a code for itunes as well if you go that route.

The special features are good for the two disc editions but I am a bit disappointed that we don't get a feature length commentary track from Brad Bird and tom Cruise but we do get Bird's commentary for the deleted scenes and alternate opening sequence for the film. We also get featurettes on the dust storm sequence (a truly amazing sequence in a film filled with them) as...

This movie has a ton of "hands-down" moments. Among them:
- Probably one of the best pure action movies I have ever seen. Yes, the plot is silly, but this is not a movie you walk into expecting it to change your perspective on life. It's just a fun and exciting movie which puts a very nice spin on the tired franchise with the Murphy's Law conundrums. Part of the fun is watching how Tom Cruise and team find their way around everything that the plot throws at them. One of my favorite sequences in MI3 was the Italy scenes where a daring heist is carried off flawlessly. ok I admit it I am a batman fan. Big time, I have enough batman paraphernalia to start my own store. As such I don't miss any batman or justice league movie that comes out. GO FAIRY TAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let me start out by saying I can not wait for this release on April 30th and already have my copy on pre-order. I am a big fan of both the manga and the anime. I can still remember going to my local book store and picking up the first vol. when it was first released in America and loving it. To this date it has always been one of my favorite anime's. I have always wanted to own the dvd's of the series but have felt that 12 episodes for 30 dollars i feel i wasn't getting my moneys worth but now were getting the first 24 episodes which cover's the Macao arc the Daybreak arc the lullaby arc the Galuna Island arc and starts the Phantom Lord arc I would say that now i feel i'am getting my moneys worth.

Fairy Tale Collection 1!!

This is a Good start to the series it just starts out kinda crazy! For me the begining of the series made me un easy but once I got to the last 4 episodes of season one I was glad to see the series maturing into the addictive freindsship series it is today^_^. I really enjoy this series and bought collection 2 together on a whim and can wait for collection 3 of the series!. Anyways for those new to the series just bear through the first 8 episodes and you'll absolutely love the series from then on:) Great value I'm just giving it 4 stars cuz the start is so rocky.

Fairy Tail is an absolutely amazing anime that you just have to see! Collection one includes the first 24 episodes of the series. Fairy Tail follows the story of the members of the Fairy Tail Wizard's guild as they perform magical jobs and form teams with each other to get jobs done. The viewer's window into the guild is Lucy. Lucy is a brand new member, and you learn things as she does, from how guilds work to learning about the other guild members. Throughout the collection Lucy makes friends with her fellow guild members. Lucy, Natsu, Gray, Erza and Happy are just starting out as a team, they have done a couple of jobs together and are working out the kinks in their team. Poor Lucy has her hands full with Natsu, Gray and Erza on her team, they tend to go overboard and cause a lot of damage to the villlages they are working in.

The anime is well done with a bright and colorful art style. The English voice cast did a great job dubbing this but the Japanese audio is...

An Incredible Story of Familial Bonds
This film is one of the most incredible, beautiful, and heart wrenching works of art I have ever seen. Whether you're into anime or not, anybody should be able to appreciate this fantastic movie. This is a story about love, and familial bonds, and just how strong those forces can be. Don't watch if you aren't prepared to cry like a baby. The animation is stunning. It has that kind of older, hand-drawn feel that we saw a lot of in the 90s, with the high definition that can only come with more recent projects. The soundtrack is fantastic, giving feelings of both elation and devastation when appropriate. The Japanese voice cast is great, and while I can't as of yet speak for the English dub, I will be editing this review with my thoughts on that, as well as the box set itself and the features, when the product is actually released.

She flees with her two children, Yuki and Ame, and tries to live a quiet life in the rural countryside away from prying eyes. But raising two wolf children is harder than it seems.

This is a spectacular, beautiful film. It's documenting the life of a special family, and each shot and situation is done with care and heart. I found far better than Summer Wars, the director's previous work, and this without big action sequences or garish CGI. The two wolf children are absolutely adorable, and watching them grow up and deal with their nature is both heartwarming and sad.

I found the dub to be excellent. Young Yuki in particular was outstanding, but all the voices fit well and none grate. I'm often harsh on dubs, and prefer subs, but Funimation did a great job here. The Instant Video version was a great...
Simply amazing.

Wolf Children is by far one of my favourite movies, and being an anime fan my whole life, I've had the opportunity to experience a LOT of animation. This is definitely among the top! The story of a young mother who gives it all for her children is incredibly touching, and it's told through amazing visuals accompanied by beautiful music. I recommend it to everyone, whether you're an anime fan or not. I also recommend a box of kleenex and something to hug.

Due to it not being released in America until a year and a half later than in Japan, I too was one of the people who downloaded a fansub. But like other reviewers have said, please buy the actual DVD to support the creators! They truly deserve every bit of it.

"Castle in the Sky" is a masterpiece of one of Japan's finest filmakers. There is a simple artistry to Miyazaki's stories. This is a children's film, but it is in the tradition of children's stories that appeal to all ages. A rare, pure fantasy, the film has the same magic as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" and other early Disney films.
I first saw this movie when it was released in US theaters as "Laputa the Floating Island." The mythical floating island of Laputa is taken from Swift's "Gulliver's Travels." Like Swift, Miyazaki cloaks a political statement with a fantasy, giving deeper meaning to his story. Environmentalism has always been central to his films, and "Castle in the Sky" is no exception.

I love Studio Ghibli movies. There's a magical element of adventure and heart that are hard to find elsewhere. And Laputa is by far my favorite movie of all Ghibli movies I've seen (seen most of them). I think the English release unfortunately killed it. Note: The 2003 and the newer 2010 DVD versions both point to the same reviews. This review is based on the 2003 Disney American DVD release. It appears that the 2010 version reverts back to the original Japanese soundtrack, extra filler dialogue not present in the Japanese version have been removed. Most Admired and Adored Miyazaki Film
Laputa, Castle in the Sky, is the most creative, ambitious, and adventurous Miyazaki film I have ever seen. I like Miyazaki's work very much for its grandeur, originality, and imagination. Sadly to say that Disney has lost its creative edge. It has been copying stories all over the world. Disney promised to release the Castle in the Sky video in 1999 but they failed to keep their promise. (Disney, please include the original Japanese soundtrack on the US release because I don't like the English voice actor behind Pasu.)
After 16 years since Castle in the Sky was first released in the theatres, I still consider it the creme da la creme of all anime movies. Certainly Laputa's art direction cannot compare to today's S/B CGI and S/B 3D animation. It’s been a few months since we last saw the Justice League in LEGO: DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD UltraViolet Combo Pack) and things are going well. Our heroes are continually embarrassing the villains. That’s when Lex Luthor hatches his plan to form a legion, a legion of DOOM (cue maniacal laughing.) It’s soon revealed that this is not Luthor’s plan, but Darkseid’s. He intends to conquer the earth and needs the villains to do his dirty work. There are a few twists and turns and a surprise character introduction in the second act which was fun and crucial to the plot.
We get many of the same characters we’ve seen before and this time Cyborg takes center stage, hungry for acceptance and the only one who can see through the mind tricks pulled on the League later in the film. The Trickster makes a welcome appearance...

My 5 year old super hero lego lover loves this movie! He was cackling during several parts. Thank you for making movies that kids and adults can enjoy together!!! There are too few superhero shows/movies that I can let my son watch without worrying about what he will see or hear.

Another fun Justice League adventure in the books, another quality family-friendly film
Another wonderful Justice League adventure, featuring our most favorite heroes. While the movie starts with the exploits of numerous Justice League members, the main movie centers around Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Cyborg, who is trying to establish is roe in the team. (I must say, I'm sad not to much or any action out of Aquaman or Green Arrow). The team squares off against the Legion of Doom (quickly distilled down to only a handful of villains via a creative selection process)

The movie plot is straight-forward, without being too boring. The introduction of Martian Manhunter is interesting, and how he interacts with the League in the beginning.

Because this being a LEGO-theme movie, you will see numerous vehicles from the Lego DC Hero kits that are already on the store shelves (even the inexplicable Batman robot). But at least my son was excited when he saw the JL ship (Javelin) on screen, "Daddy, I have that plane...

Miyazaki's Masterpiece on Blu-Ray
What can be said about "Spirited Away" that has not been stated before? This is one of the best animated films ever created and arguably the highlight of Hayao Miyazaki's extraordinary career. This incredibly imaginative work is combined with an emotional story that really makes this one special.

This is the story of Chihiro, a 10 year old girl who is moving to a new city when her parents decide to take a quick detour to what seems to be an abandoned amusement park. However, the park is filled with magical creatures and her parents are turned into pigs. Chihiro must grow up quickly in this exotic world not only to save her parents, but to survive.

I cannot speak enough about the story itself which is expertly crafted or the beautiful animation that includes some wonderful scenes at the bath house, the strange characters that fill the screen and my favorite, the train on the flooded tracks which provides views of the distant clouds that almost had me...

Pre-ordered this so I could watch this the day it came out (I've been anxiously awaiting this blu ray for more years than I'd like to admit) and refrained from watching it until I could finally bear witness to the excellence that is 1080p. Now we all know and love the movie and this totally delivers. It has everything the dvd had but in such gorgeous quality I'm blown away. This was done very well, my only complaint is it should have come out much sooner! I'm only 5 minutes in but already so excited. I'm a Miyazaki lover through and through which makes these blu rays something special and with every single penny. Font waste your time waiting for this to get cheaper because it never will. Blow the money and thank me later. Now I'm going to finish the movie while you order and thank me later!

Excellent Blu-ray transfer. ZERO bonus features.
It can be argued that Lilo & Stitch is one of the strongest and most beloved Disney animated films. This holds true for many (especially myself), so you can imagine my excitement when Disney finally announced a Blu-ray release for the film. They even chose to include Stitch Has A Glitch, an excellent follow-up to the series and TV show. This also made me excited for a separate 2-pack with Stitch! The Movie and Leroy & Stitch.

That eagerness quickly faded.

As stunning as the transfer is on this Blu-ray release, it is completely lacking -ANY- bonus features. That's right, no deleted scenes, no special interviews, and ESPECIALLY lacking is the excellent commentary that many fans enjoyed for its thoroughness and loving care towards the film's creation. The back of the box has the audacity to claim that Stitch Has A Glitch is THE bonus feature, "with more fun, laughter and adventure for the entire family". Yes, the movie is a nice supplement to the main film, but it...
Great Movie, Rotten Blu-ray

It's disheartening to see Disney continue to release their Blu-ray titles with little or no extra content. They did this with "Avengers" and "Wreck it Ralph" but this takes it to a whole new level! I can't in good conscience purchase this release due to the zero extras in the Blu-ray, and I adore the movie itself! They could have at least tried to add in the extras from their prior DVD releases but they couldn't even do that! I really hope Disney will stop this trend of lack of extras but I fear as long as consumers buy their products and they continue to cut costs, don't expect anything less from the mouse.

Shame on Disney for taking out ALL the special features!
My ONE star rating is not for the actual animated film, which is one of my favorite Disney films. I would give the actual film a FIVE star rating.

BUT, I can't in all consciousness give this so-called "special edition" Blu-Ray/DVD combo version more than ONE star. In fact, if I could, I would give it a ZERO. For anybody who had the two DVD releases, "Lilo & Stitch" came with a bunch of special features including some of the cute teaser trailers featuring other Disney characters and one of the BEST and LONGEST "making of" featurettes I've seen on a Disney DVD.

Instead of putting any special features, they try to trick us into thinking the so-called sequel IS the special feature.

Inside Out is probably the biggest gamble that Pixar ever made trying to tell an animated story. It's more geared to adults than any other film they have ever made. It's complicated, with a lot of very complex metaphors. It attempts to tell a story far more related to the real world than any they have ever told as far as I can tell. There's no witches, magic, space-rangers, talking inanimate objects, or the like. And yet...

I knew from the trailers and reading a book about Pixar that this film was going to be different from the other ones that Pixar has released. I knew it was a gamble. But it also struck me as being more intelligent, more thoughtful, and perhaps more from the heart and soul than some of their other films (and that takes some doing). I was not wrong and I am glad I ventured out to a theater to see this film.

It's an ambitious undertaking to try to tell a story about the emotions in control of a person's mind, and even moreso when you dive into...

Pixar has made so many great movies over the last decade, and as a fan, it is hard to really say which one is my favorite. From Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, A Bug's Life, and UP, the company responsible for the Toy Story phenomenon has yet again delivered audiences a highly unique movie in Inside Out.

Inside Out centers primarily on 11 year old Riley. Riley's emotions: Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Disgust, are shown to play a crucial part in how Riley responds, interacts, and feels in certain situations. Joy, is shown to be her source of happiness, Fear to provide her safety, Anger to keep her life fair, Disgust to keep her from being stressed, and/or her likes/dislikes, and Sadness a loner who doesn't feel she is actually needed for Riley to function. Soon Riley's family moves to San Francisco due to her father getting a new job, and Riley and her emotions are in for an unforgettable journey.

What a wonderful movie! It was funny, heartwarming, and had a wonderful message about empathy.

I took my daughter to see this in the theater. We laughed. We cried (she was really affected by the feelings of the characters at the end and was bawling because she felt their sadness. That sounds sad and pitiful, but it is amazing how easily this movie connected with a 4 year old on a deep emotional level). It was just an all around amazing movie experience.

The way it breaks down complex psychological profiles into 5 funny and entertaining characters is fantastic. And it delves into some pretty intensive psychological concepts in a way that comes across as fun and entertaining. It's a funny movie. It's a heartwarming movie. And it's a very intelligent movie.

The movie is fantastic if you love Miyazaki in s personal way
Miyazaki is an animation genius who got his start drawing airplanes……and so his last film before retirement is about a kid who grew up to design airplanes. I can't help but wonder how autobiographical this is.
This film encompasses one half of everything that makes Miyazaki great. Miyazaki came out of retirement once before and made Ponyo. That film carried his Speilbergian love of childhood, his whimsey, his environmental political views (its in small doses and does not ruin the film for a second), and dreamlike art on the border between terrifying and heavenly. That is half of all Miyazaki films that appeals to kids. The Wind Rises is the other half. The side of Miyazaki that loves flight and engineering, tides of tragedy, and the little beautiful things lost in plain sight in the lives of his characters and makes you cry with hope.
Beautiful animation and a fitting swan song for the director of the best animated films of this century……..unless...
Hayao Miyazaki's swan song is just about perfect
The trailer for The Wind Rises only hints at some of the film's secrets, but it's worth a look if you are completely new to the works of director Hayao Miyazaki. This is not a slick Disney production in 3D with modern graphics, but a softer 2D watercolor piece. All of Miyazaki's movies use this style and it can be disappointing for some. I find it utterly beautiful.

If you are familiar with Miyazaki, the important thing to note is that The Wind Rises is different in tone to all of his established classics. This is a movie set in the real world, and it tells the story of, Jiro Horikoshi, who designed Japanese fighter planes during the second world war. I was worried that the story might disappoint, as I love Miyazaki's fantasy worlds, but all of the magic was present.

One thing I should mention immediately is that this is not a story that is likely to engage young children in the way that Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, or Kiki's Delivery Service did. The two main...

What is there left to say that hasn't been said of this movie? For those who haven't watched it, Pixar's Up is notable for its opening scenes that beautifully expresses the emotional heft the main character will carry for the rest of the movie. I have been an animation fan all of my life. I've seen almost every Disney animated flick countless times. I've studied the work of Chuck Jones and marveled at the best of Don Bluth.

I have been a fan of Japanese animation in partuclar for years. I have seen countless animated films and studied them in depth. I own almost every Studio Ghibli film ever made (including Whisper of the Heart, the Cat Returns, Castle in the Sky, and Castle of Cagliostro). I am here to tell you that Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is without a doubt the greatest animated film I have ever seen in my life...

First of all, this is the first film that the animation genius Miyazaki ever attempted through his own studio. It is also a greatly condensed story, being adapted from a manga that it's creator wrote which was quite lengthly. That being said, this movie is PERFECT.

Disney, after originally having scheduled the release of this masterpiece for August 31, having moved it to Feb. 22, and having taken it off the release list, has now reinstated its release on Feb. 22. It will be released with Porco Rosso and The Cat Returns; originally, it was to be released with My Neighbor Totoro, but The Cat has been substituted. This is mistifying, because Cat is a sequel to Whisper from the Heart, a sweet and endearing film that has never been released in the U.S.; a studio does not usually release the sequel first. What is Disney thinking, and what is to be done with Totoro?

Funimation 25th Anniversary Blu-ray review
Since Amazon condenses the reviews of multiple formats into one pile, I hope this one stands out. It covers the new 25th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD combo pack from Funimation, NOT Bandai'a 2009 Blu-ray or one of the many earlier DVD releases. I was able to get an advance copy from Funimation and also used it to write a separate full-length review of this title, listed below.

"Akira" still holds up perfectly well after 25 years. The film condenses a LOT of material into two hours; not surprising, since writer/director Katsuhiro Otomo's long-running manga series was still being written after its 1988 release. This epic, violent, mind-melting slice of animated history is chock full of terrific visuals, an amazing soundtrack and, of course, the sci-fi tinged story that introduced many to Kaneda, Tetsuo and company. Those new to the film will find it an exhausting experience, but don't give up: the eye candy will suck you in, but there's a real heart and soul to the story that...

Akira is one of those movies that you never forget. The images are extremely powerful and graphic, so that they stick with you long after the movie is over. Despite its sometimes-confusing plot line, this movie is a wonderfully written, chilling look into the future, and into humanity as a whole. The movie more or less centers around a teenage biker gang in Neo-Tokyo, thirty-years after World War III. The main characters, Kaneda and Tetsuo, are two childhood friends who are constantly in competition with each other (Tetsuo being the weaker, taunted one.) Regardless, Tetsuo still looks up to Kaneda. As the introduction moves out of the chase scene, an interesting encounter with an odd looking child (who awakens the physic abilities lying dormant within Tetsuo's mind) truly begins the movie.
