True Blood: The Complete Seventh Season (DVD)

"True Blood is the sexy, scary, wildly entertaining series from Oscar® and Emmy winner Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) and based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. In this final season, an initial battle between raging Hep-Vamps and their Bon Temps prey sets the stage for a season-long series of hair-raising denouements for Sookie, Bill, Eric, Jason, Sam, Alcide, Tara and their human/vampire allies and adversaries. In the end, some of True Blood's most beloved figures will meet cruel fates, while others will cheat death (true and otherwise) to forge happily-ever-after relationships that will leave fans surprised and, ultimately, satisfied. What will happen to your favorite True Blood character?"

Review :
A Break from Form... But That's OK! *SPOILER FREE*
First of all, this is not like any season of True Blood you've ever watched before. I've been watching since way back when season one aired and have watched every season at least two or three times. Like many of you, I've always found myself enthralled by the tight plots, dynamic characters, and sharp dialogue. Season 7 was incredibly different than ones from the past... But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I think the reason that season 7 is so different is because it is heavily character driven, whereas the previous seasons have been more plot driven. True Blood season 7 (TB7) really digs deep into our favorite characters' inner psyches and fleshes out how they have grown and changed throughout the years. Due to this more character-oriented storyline, a lot of the action seen in past seasons is lost, replaced with more dialogue, character development, and personal reflection. I know this upset some fans (I myself was a bit perturbed by it at times), but, looking back...
Imagine you had a favorite pair of jeans
Spoilers For Sure
Imagine you had a favorite pair of jeans. You loved them so much but they became tattered (and not in a good way). You tried to sew them but the best you could do is put patches on them, ugly patches. These were still your jeans but not the same. This is how I see how the writers botched up our beloved series. They kept putting ugly patches on True Blood. It was still recognized as True Blood but a horrible version.
After barely keeping up with Season 6, I watched Season 7 as a chore I felt I had to do. Surprisingly, I liked the first few episodes and then it all fell apart. Why did we have to go back to Taraville? Who cares about the Reverend or Tara's mother? Wasn't their story all sewn up? Why was so much time spent on Jessica and Hoyt? Jason? Snore. Sara Newlin? Double snore. I give this review three stars because I still enjoyed the wonderful humorous dialogue of Pam. Don't expect not to be disappointed. If it was still a great series, I...
What a huge disappointment
SPOILERS

When Alan Ball left after Season 5, I remained optimistic that the show would still be entertaining and full of my favorite characters. Season 6 was enjoyable, and then came this. What a *huge* let down. I have every single season on DVD, but I will never buy this one. I never want to watch it again. It was boring, they killed characters off for no reason that made sense to the plot. What made it worse was the writers spent all this time on new characters and unimportant side characters. I didn't care about Adilyn and Wade's story or Tara's mom. They retconned several things (for one, Tara's mom had an affair with Rev Daniels, that is how they began, but they rewrote their relationship as being some pure, romantic, sweet thing).

I have always been an Eric fan, but I also liked Bill. By the end, I wanted to scream, just die already! They made this last season so full of insufferable angst, it was painful to watch. They squandered Lafayette. They...

WHEN DISGRACED NEW YORK TIMES REPORTER MICHAEL FINKEL MEETS ACCUSED KILLER CHRISTIAN LONGO - WHO HAS TAKEN ON FINKEL'S IDENTITY - HIS INVESTIGATION MORPHS INTO A GAME OF CAT-AND-MOUSE.

Review :
EVERYBODY DESERVES TO HAVE THEIR STORY HEARD
New York Times reporter Mike Finkel places the wrong face with a name on a lead story. He loses his job and is exiled to Montana to live with his girlfriend (Felicity Jones). As fate would have it, Christian Longo (James Franco) is accused of killing his family. He had been using Mike Finkel as his alias. He also grants an exclusive story to Finkel, desperate for work.

Based on a true story, the film looks at the psychological and personal drama as Finkel feels privileged to be in this position, but later takes a different position.

I must say the acting was superb in a film that will most likely go unnoticed. A great film for those who like dramas and true crime.
Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

A low-key, fascinating true-crime drama with stellar performances
True Story is a restrained and slowly burning, yet very riveting meditation on the point at which crime and journalism intersect (the true-crime genre pioneered by Truman Capote with In Cold Blood) and its inherent ethical conundrums. Jonah Hill portrays Michael, an ambitious and widely admired reporter whose star rapidly fades after it is revealed he conflated and toyed with details and personalities to enhance a prestigious cover story. James Franco co-stars as Christian, an Oregon man charged with the brutal murder of his wife and three children. Upon his arrest in Mexico, Christian tells the authorities he is Michael (he later claims to be a fan), and this inexplicable decision unites the two men, both cynics and fabulists in one way or another. Christian agrees to tell his side of a tragic tale, and Michael spots a complicated and even nauseating, but viable chance to revive his career in nonfiction. Previous comic collaborators Hill and Franco are in fine dramatic form, and...
TRUE STORY was not nearly as good as it could have been and that's a real shame!
I remember when this all occurred. Christian Longo posing as a New York Times reporter living in Mexico, on the run after his wife and 3 young children had all been found murdered. I also was one of those people who read, "True Story" about the relationship of the killer and the reporter.
With that said, I was really looking forward to this movie. I thought it would be absolutely great, but it wasn't near what it could've been! James Franco did a brilliant job of portraying Longo, the selfish, narcissistic, psychopath with the material he was given. I just wish the script had been as good as the real story that was written in the book by Mike Finkel. TRUE STORY failed to deliver the 5 stars I was certain it would be, but the actors were great with what they had to work with. It's too bad because I think it could've been SO much better!

Now its sixth unforgettable season, True Blood is HBO's sexy, scary, wildly entertaining series from Oscar- and Emmy-winner Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) and based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. In addition to returning TB favorites - led by human/faerie hybrid Sookie (Anna Paquin), her unlikely vampire ally Eric (Alexander SkarsgÄrd), and newly reconstituted supervamp Bill (Stephen Moyer) - Season 6 introduces several jarring storylines that threaten what little sense of normalcy remains in and around Bon Temps. As "Billith" comes to terms with his newfound powers after emerging from a pool of blood at the end of Season 5, Louisiana Governor Truman Burrell (new cast member Arliss Howard) declares open season on vampires, replete with novel anti-vamp weapons and a high-tech internment camp. Meanwhile, Sookie and Jason steel themselves for an encounter with the killer of their parents: the mysterious and ancient Warlow, whose identity remains a troubling mystery as the season unfolds.

Creator (of the show, not the books in which they're based on) and showrunner Alan Ball left True Blood (to helm Cinemax's Banshee, great show) after the fifth season and this worried a lot of fans. While I can say that this show has changed a lot from season 1 to...
A solid continuation of the series but the plot line is getting weak!
We just finished watching the Season 6 True Blood disks. They were good but in a different style than many of the previous seasons. Since the TV version has deviated so much from the Sookie Stackhouse books they are writing their own script and story as they move along. The program is shown on a pay for view network and they have included a lot of sex, nudity and graphic bloody violence to boost the ratings. We rated the season as a 4 star as my wife enjoys the shows more when Sookie has a strong love interest and a little less violence with everyone having sex with everyone else. The plot line is starting to get weak. We have read all of the books and seen all of the TV series.

I won't ruin the storyline with any spoilers but the plot does have a lot of action and it is pretty good at times and at others the producers just expected the violence and sex to carry the story. The plot line is getting a little stale and this season is not as good as some of the previous...
Weaker than previous seasons
I am a huge fan of the show and I usually wait for each episode with impatience. This season though I found myself not that engaged with the story-line. Last season ended with a loud bang, with Bill gaining some scary powers and Eric, Sookie and the rest of the band running away from the compound. Here we see how the story continues and the series quickly jumps into topics that have to do with Warlow, Sookie's past and a powerful anti-vampire group.

The premise of the story is not bad, but the first half of the season the execution is lacking. It almost feels as if the writers did not really know which direction to take this series in. Finally, in the second half of the season, the story picks up and the end is much better than the beginning. Overall though, it is clearly the weakest season so far and it has shown in the drop in ratings.

Sadly, this was probably one of the contributing factors for HBO to decide that there will only be one more season of this...

HBO premieres a new drama series, True Detective, this season focusing on Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and "Rust" Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), two detectives and former partners who worked in Louisiana's Criminal Investigation Division in the mid-1990s.

In 2012, for reasons not immediately revealed, the two are interviewed separately by investigators about their most notorious case: the macabre 1995 murder of a prostitute by a possible serial killer with disturbing occult leanings. As they look back on the case, Hart and Cohle's personal backstories and often-strained relationship become a major focal point.

Hart, an outgoing native Louisianan and family man whose marriage is being frayed by work stress and infidelity, is (at least on the surface) the polar opposite of Cohle, a lone-wolf pessimist and former narcotics detective from Texas. While the plot is moved forward by their shared obsession to hunt down the ritual killer, the true drama centers around the mercurial nature of Hart and Cohle's relationship and personalities, and how they affect each other as detectives, friends, and men.

Review :
The world needs bad men...
"You're not gonna win the Oscar, no matter how hard you try."

8 episodes. 2 Hollywood actors. 1 director. 1 writer. 1 extraordinary show.

From the mind of Nic Pizzolatto comes True Detective, a dark, profound and masterful crime thriller set in the bayous of Louisiana. Written with a philosophical and sharp acuity, True Detective tells the story of two detectives (Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson) and their 17- year manhunt for a deranged serial killer.

This is not an ordinary cop show. It isn't about tidy cases, chasing perps or trailing leads. There isn't red tape, standard procedures or closure at the end of the day. What you will find is broken marriages, darkness inherent in the human soul, and philosophical notions on the meaning (or lack thereof) of life.

McConaughey and Harrelson as Rust Cohle and Martin Hart make an unlikely and surprisingly fascinating duo. Cohle is a dark, abstract individual, living alone, full of loss and...
Dark, but brilliant
I must say - this series caught me by surprise. Scenes I saw in advance didn't really appeal at all - then I watched a complete episode. I have no idea where the writer came up with his insights into contemporary human existence, but they are profound and engaging, and captivatingly expressed through the character of Cohle played with Emmy-level skill by Matthew McConaughey. Well done. Not to be missed.
