A film which every man of every faith can embrace!
It seems like the only way anyone hears about this movie, its either from fanatic word of mouth or from seeing it sitting in Blockbusters. Thats a shame, because this first outing by director Troy Duffy is an extremely cool film that deserves all the attention it can get.
Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus play two good ole Irish Catholic boys in Boston, who one day get sick of the corruption in the city and begin a bloody crusade to wipe it out. Willem DaFoe plays the FBI agent hot on their trail, who is torn between bringing the mysterious vigilantes to justice, or joining their crusade.
The film is, simply put, cool. Its one of the only movies that actually make going to church look cool. Don't be fooled by the description, however; this is not an action movie. Do not expect blazing gun battles with crazy angles and MTV like editing. This is a film about morality, doing what one thinks is right, and having codes of honour. It's about all those things, and how close...
A Sleeper Fan's Opinion
If you are a big fan of sleeper films, then this should be #1 on your movies to rent list. After you watch it, it will be #1 on your movies to buy list. This movie will really toy with you from the very beginning. As an action movie, you see the results of the action sequence before you see the actual scene. By doing this, the director keeps you on the edge of your seat, dying to know what happened and how. After the first sequence like this, you will be glued to your TV. Personally, I enjoyed this style of storytelling immensly because it was very fresh. This movie has an original plot, great character development, fantastic dialogue and several extremely humorous scenes. Oh, and great action too. For the DVD fan, there are great special features. The deleted scenes are some of the best I have ever seen, and I wish that they had been left in the theatrical release. I can only hope for a directors cut somewhere down the line. Awesome film, disappointing dvd.

I love the Boondock Saints. It's funny and action packed all at once. Naturally, when the special edition came out I jumped right on it. But, upon viewing it I realized the only thing extended in the "unrated" edition were the fight scenes. I figured they'd put in all the "deleted scenes" from the special features. I was very disappointed in that. I can't see a glaring difference between the rated/unrated editions. I'm just as happy with my first version, the only thing they seem to make better is the box the dvd comes in.

Both the movie and the man (make that super-man) are driven by vengeance, anger, and the existential angst of the whole "with great power comes great blah, blah, blah" thing. But The Wolverine has a sense of higher responsibility and a quietude that distinguishes it from the likes of Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and even the numerous X-Men movies that forged its legacy. With Hugh Jackman reprising the role (for the sixth time) that made him a movie star, The Wolverine is the least like any of its predecessors for the way it prefers subdued tension and real dramatic buildup of character rather than all-out frenzied action. There are plenty of elegantly realized set pieces that make visual sense and have direct bearing on the story (not necessarily things that are a priority in other mega-budget actioners), but the moments of talk and gentler sense of introspection that director James Mangold carefully oversees are more important and equally as satisfying. The events of The Wolverine take place in the aftermath of 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, with Wolverine/Logan's grief over the death of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) still raw. He's become a hermit somewhere in the frozen north, still seething with inward rage. The appearance of a lethal Japanese pixie named Yukio (Rila Fukushima) distracts him with a message from an old friend who wants to say goodbye. He's whisked to an idealized, manga-inspired Japan where billionaire industrialist Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi) is about to pass on. Logan saved him near the end of World War II (a truly haunting sequence), a debt Yashida wishes to repay by relieving Logan of the curse of his immortality and the healing power of his adamantine bones (and claws). Mangold has cited numerous samurai films as inspiration, and The Wolverine stands out as a classic eastern western for the thematic elements it incorporates from Japanese cinema and the iconic American genre. The other important characters in this cunningly entertaining morality play are Yashida's beloved daughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto), who battles ethereal dream encounters with Jean Grey for Logan's heart, and his evil son Shingen (Hiroyuki Sanada). There's also Yashida's creepy, statuesque doctor, who we later get to know as Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova), another mutant who may actually have the power to kill Wolverine. The story is loosely based on a popular Wolverine comic series from 1982 that sets the stage for all the mythical Japanese elements, including a final battle with a scary adamantine samurai warrior-bot. Another super-cool CGI action scene is set on top of a bullet train going top speed (believe it or not, Jackman's enormous, ripped, straining, hyper-vascularized pecs and neck were not computer-enhanced). The Wolverine is an unexpected success in the year's blockbuster field for action that is in service of the story and for a temperament that pays homage to samurai ronin legends as well as James Bond-style summer-movie joyousness. That it is 2013's least superhero-clichéd comic book fantasy is also high praise. And with The Wolverine still cursed with immortality, there will no doubt be more praises as the X-Men universe continues to expand (be sure not to look away before the credits are through). --Ted Fry

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE UNRATED CUT AND THE THEATRICAL CUT
The Unrated Cut runs about 12 minutes longer than the Theatrical Cut, and contains several new scenes including a much expanded ninja action scene. Wolverine drops a few more choice curse words and there is now CG-gore. I'd say it's more like a hard PG-13 rather than an R-rated cut.

The UNRATED Cut is much better than the theatrical cut.

**Note, SPOILERS follow, so read at your own risk**.

1) There is more gore, but primarily CGI blood sprays. Some shots of Wolverine's claws going through people's limbs, but nothing explicit. No graphic dismemberments.

2) Wolverine drops a few more f-bombs.

3) Some of the opening scenes depicting Wolverine at the POW camp are a little longer.

4) The scene involving Wolverine, an arrow, and the hunter is slightly longer and more brutal.

5) Slightly longer dialogue with Yukio on the way to the plane.

Film review: The Wolverine (2013)
Comparing "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" to "The Wolverine" is like comparing apples to oranges. They are both about Marvel's burly and animalistic Wolverine, but they could not be any more different. Origins seemed to explore a bit of Wolvie's past under the framework of the prior X-Men movies (i.e. familiar characters, settings, and themes), but unfortunately it didn't hit home like the prior X-Men films. The writing fell flat, because 20th Century Fox took odd twists and turns with fan favorites like Gambit and Deadpool and then never expanded on them in future films like they promised. Instead of bridging Wolverine's backstory to the acclaimed X-Men trilogy, Fox ended up widening the gap.

However, "The Wolverine," takes an entirely different approach to the eponymous character. Audiences get to see the Adamantium and claws stripped away in a more emotionally driven film. Wolverine is facing an existential crisis. Following the events of "X-Men: The Last Stand"...

It's almost like a graphic novel of the original.

These three films illustrate just how difficult it is to make a movie of a story as complex as Atlas Shrugged. Unfortunately, the quality of each of the three parts is on a declining scale with AS3 being the least inspiring of them. Swapping out the cast for each segment didn't help. I admire the fact that at least an effort was made to tell a story that is so politically incorrect I only wish Ayn Rand could have been here to write the screen play. I view the Atlas Shrugged trilogy as a kind of video "Cliff Notes" of the book. You get the general idea but you must read the original in its entirety to understand what Rand was saying. I liked the book much better but that is frequently the case.

Not worth the wait.......
The third installment to the Atlas Shrugged trilogy is now out for viewing and review. Yay! and What the Hell? For the third time, the cast and crew have changed, and this time, not for the better. The actors in this movie are marginal at best, and definitely NOT suited for the roles in which they were cast. Not a single person who appeared in this installment possessed the gravitas to carry their role. None, zero, zippo, nada. The scenes were very disjointed and didn't flow very well. I would like the writers to have taken more time to write a more concise and tightly woven script for this final third of the book. I've heard there are tentative plans to produce this book as a 39 part, 3-year series. If so, I'm delighted, because what this book desperately needs is character consistency. Hooray for Ayn Rand and Capitalism
The large number of one’s star reviews of this movie by persons claiming to be Ayn Rand fans was a surprise. Last night I watched Atlas shrugged III and now I understand. While it is apparent from the special effects and the cast that this was a low-budget movie but it is one of the best examples of Ayn Rand’s philosophy that I have found. It is by far the most damning exposé of the Aristocracy’s plan to convert all of us “inferiors” into 21st century serfs. Now I understand why the Aristocracy is trying to discredit this film.
Am I an Ayn Rand fan? Absolutely! I discovered Ayn Rand in the early 60s since then I have read Atlas shrugged seven times and most of her the books more than once. I still have all the copies of the “Objectivist Newsletter” published years ago by an Ayn Rand and Nathaniel Branden.

I was surprised at the quality of the 3D conversion, given that it used the automated JVC Fox workstation that was used for Jumper 3D and I, Robot 3D. The process costs about a third of what a typical catalog 3D conversion costs and can be done with about 3 people in 3 months. In contrast, Titanic took hundreds of people over a year to convert.

The slow rate of adoption of 3D has been attributed, in part, to the lack of available content. Fox Home Entertainment with JVC developed a business model using automated equipment that allowed the 3D conversion of catalog movies profitably.
I was doubtful that they would be successful in this after watching 3D clips of I, Robot shortly after it was released. I changed my mind after purchasing and watching Predator 3D.

The only caveat is that the extras are provided via a Disk two DVD. (Disk...

I am not going to be buying on Blu-Ray, however, until the chowder-heads over at Fox start including all of the ALREADY PRODUCED extras on their Blu-Ray discs. Case in point: Predator.

Predator on Blu-Ray features a higher definition transfer (though on a single layer disc), but carries over none of the special features from the 2-disc DVD. How hard would this have been? Make it a dual layer Blu-Ray, and just throw them all on there in standard definition. That would have guaranteed and instant buy for me. But this habit of dumping the film bare-bones onto Blu-Ray is reminiscent of the early days of DVD, and I thought we were past that. Other studios are doing a fine job of including all the special features, so why is Fox being dumb? And why are they slapping a $40 MSRP on a bare-bones...

It was a fullscreen, widescreen disc with black bars on top, bottom, left, and right (which insluts my HD TV). The film was also not cleaned before transfer so it included wonderful hairs and scratches too. That's not to mention the films always horrible fuzzyness.

Don't believe all the whiners, Predator: The Ultimate Hunter Edition is the best this film has ever looked, and probably ever will look. Some people complained about too much Digital Noise Reduction. They said that it doesn't look like its supposed to anymore...don't listen to them. I almost didn't buy this disc because of all the complaining people were doing, but I'm glad I did.

Yes, there are maybe 3 shots where Carl Weathers' face looks a little too smooth in the beginning of the film, but that comprises about 10 seconds of the film. The rest of it looks great. The film still has film grain, it just isn't...

EVERYBODY DESERVES TO HAVE THEIR STORY HEARD

New York Times reporter Mike Finkel places the wrong face with a name on a lead story. He loses his job and is exiled to Montana to live with his girlfriend (Felicity Jones). As fate would have it, Christian Longo (James Franco) is accused of killing his family. He had been using Mike Finkel as his alias. He also grants an exclusive story to Finkel, desperate for work.

Based on a true story, the film looks at the psychological and personal drama as Finkel feels privileged to be in this position, but later takes a different position.

I must say the acting was superb in a film that will most likely go unnoticed. A great film for those who like dramas and true crime.
Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

True Story is a restrained and slowly burning, yet very riveting meditation on the point at which crime and journalism intersect (the true-crime genre pioneered by Truman Capote with In Cold Blood) and its inherent ethical conundrums. Jonah Hill portrays Michael, an ambitious and widely admired reporter whose star rapidly fades after it is revealed he conflated and toyed with details and personalities to enhance a prestigious cover story. James Franco co-stars as Christian, an Oregon man charged with the brutal murder of his wife and three children. Upon his arrest in Mexico, Christian tells the authorities he is Michael (he later claims to be a fan), and this inexplicable decision unites the two men, both cynics and fabulists in one way or another. Christian agrees to tell his side of a tragic tale, and Michael spots a complicated and even nauseating, but viable chance to revive his career in nonfiction. I remember when this all occurred. Christian Longo posing as a New York Times reporter living in Mexico, on the run after his wife and 3 young children had all been found murdered. I also was one of those people who read, "True Story" about the relationship of the killer and the reporter.
With that said, I was really looking forward to this movie. I thought it would be absolutely great, but it wasn't near what it could've been! James Franco did a brilliant job of portraying Longo, the selfish, narcissistic, psychopath with the material he was given. I just wish the script had been as good as the real story that was written in the book by Mike Finkel. TRUE STORY failed to deliver the 5 stars I was certain it would be, but the actors were great with what they had to work with. It's too bad because I think it could've been SO much better!

The writers have done an admirable job in throwing viewers a few bones to hint at what could be for the pair and this is no more evident than in the season premiere, where Booth is given the OK to return to work and Bones returns from a soul-searching trip to Guatemala. And in the 100th episode ("The Parts in the Sum of the Whole"), which Boreanaz directed, the series goes back in time six years to when Booth first met Bones. And it's clear that the two were attracted to each other then, sharing an admiration of solving a case efficiently and correctly. Who knew that decayed bodies could be such a turn-on? There's a lot going on this season, and some of the episodes do fall short. The case revolving around witchcraft doesn't ring true and the quest to ID body parts found in a shark isn't up to par by Bones standards. But overall, the season is a winner. Whether the team is racing against time to deal with a serial killer, finding clues left by a compulsive hoarder, or simply celebrating another wedding, the viewer is left anticipating what comes next. The six-disc set includes all 22 episodes from the fifth season, which originally aired during the 2009-2010 television season. "The Bodies of the Bones" featurette is as fascinating as it is gross and "The Nunchuck Way" special feature is pretty cool. While the gag reel is fun to watch, it at times may leave you wondering if the actors purposely made mistakes simply to put on the DVD. --Jae-Ha Kim

Unrequited Love Episode After Episode Eroding Other Aspects
Five years on, the episode after episode inability of Booth and Bones to come together as other than crime partners is wearing thin. The first four seasons were highly comedic and capitalized on Bones's and Booth's relationship as a crime fighting duo who were also reluctantly attracted to one another. However, this season, they are a mess over one another. He is clearly and unequivocally in love. She is also in love but is scared to death of ever acting on it. This conflict occurs in every single episode.

I frankly think to break this impasse it would be better to marry them off and then have the comedic friction come from their problems as a Nick and Nora Charles type couple ("The Thin Man"). The unrequited love is sapping the considerable energy and magic of this show plus Bones and Booth as a comedic detective team. A critical but ignored strength of this amazing show
I absolutely love this show. It might be the most amazingly well-crafted t.v. show ever, along many dimensions. I agree with all of the positive comments of other reviewers. I don't have one negative comment to make, even though, I, too, miss Zach and thought he was a terrific character, well-acted. I even think the Daisy character provides an important role in the balance of the cast, as long as she is not there all the time. No show is complete without little jabs from a distracting annoyance. (Remember Eddie Haskell on "Leave it to Beaver?")
On the other hand, EVERY review that I read left out what, to me, may be the most important dimension of the show. The unspeakable gore and horrifying plots would be meaningless and perhaps sadistic if regarded as entertainment alone. Shrek has grossed over 260 million in the theaters (as of Aug. 14, 2001). That's within .05% of the top grossing animation of all times, Toy Story (@ 262 million). Shrek is a great 3D movie. The 3D computer animation is second, only to Final Fantasy. The story is more involving than what I expected. The voices were well cast and performed. The whole film awsome. I'm sure you're aware of that or you wouldn't be reading this now. It has both adult (clean adult) and kids humor. The writers plagerized just about everyone and it was hilarious. Okay, now for the DVD. This DVD is created as 2 parts. One disc is aimed for the kids and the format is "full Screen" (pan & scan) and includes 17 DVD-ROM games. The other disc is geared more for adults and is letterbox formatted. Both discs have 3 minutes of extended ending that was never scene in the theatrical release. Shrek causes shrieks of glee

Sitting in the theater, I watched my 6 1/2 year old nephew eat up the bright colors and classic sight gags, while I watched my 25 year old fiancee almost spill his popcorn laughing at the exact same joke. What I really liked about this movies was that duality-that one set of lines can be almost making me wet my pants while the more innocent version is keeping the little guys and gals glued to the screen. I found it to be reminiscent of the first Toy Story and the underlying message is easy for kids of all shapes and sizes to understand without being so cookie cutter sweet and sappy. Score for the big green guy. I'd take him home.

A wonderfully original animated film for adults as well as kids

Utterly original, terrific animated film, with great voice performances by Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy,
written with lots of adult wit and humor. Word play and visual puns abound. You don't have to be a kid to love it,
or have kids to rent or buy it. Charming, sweet, funny and romantic.

Amazing, hip use of music (including John Cale's version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'- how's that for obscure?).

On DVD, make sure you get the re-released (or out of pint original) widescreen version, so you don't lose chunks
of the lovely visuals on the sides of the frame.

The new blu-ray/DVD combo is quite strong. I always thought the DVD (the widescreen, not the 'full frame'
version) was really good looking, but the blu-ray still adds some extra, sharpness, depth, and color.
