A Movie That Asks You To Think ... Just Not Too Hard
I don't mind brainless sci-fi. Sometimes it's nice just to have something cool to look at for awhile. Also, I have no problem with movies that moralize. It's great to question things, propose new ideas, or just point at injustices in the hopes of raising awareness. I DO, however, have a problem when a movie ends up being both, especially since a lot of the time it ends up accidentally trivializing something I usually already care about. Case in point: Elysium.

The story concerns Max, a reformed criminal who lives in a futuristic, devastated Los Angeles. The world, ravaged by pollution and overpopulation, is now filled with nothing but the poor and lower classes. If you're lucky, like Max, you have a job. In his case, he works for Armadyne, the company that produces the robots that police and monitor the world. All of the wealthiest people in the world, meanwhile, have created Elysium, a utopian space colony in orbit high above Earth, where they live in unbelievably...
A movie worth owning
Normally, I don't like movies with Matt Damon but this time I think he did a fine job. I didn't really see Matt Damon, and Jodie Foster played her character just as well. But I really watch it for Sharlto Copley (Kruger), he is such a great actor and brings such a unique feel to his characters. The theme of the movie is great, especially when you don't take the message as a personal attack to whatever your current political beliefs may be. The gap between the havs and have nots is an issue that has been around as long as civilization has, even who has access to better doctors and health care. This is not just modern day problem but one that will be with us for a long time yet, but regardless stories like this should be made and the theme just brings it closer to home, maybe helping you identify with the characters.

Also I think it goes without saying that the visual presentation of this movie is incredible. The work that went into the details makes it so believable, as if...

Not quite 5-stars but it's ambitious, fast, thrilling and at times fantastic.

The visuals deliver the goods, just amazing, with a tip of the hat to the gritty look and feel of District 9. Also, and this is key, the fight and action scenes are intense and immersive. You feel like you are in them as you watch.

The plot is the classic Hollywood story split, and suspension of disbelief is a must to get the full ride from this movie. Part of the story takes place on Elysium , a highly secure, space habitat for the rich and wealthy. The other part of the story takes place on a wild and hairy 2154 Earth A.D. These stories evolve on their own and then merge to get the sparks flying.

The acting is solid as you would expect. Everyone gives pretty tight performances that help make the movie that much more entertaining.

I do agree with all of the Holiday issues-it should be released on a separate disc, and that is why this set is not rated 5 stars. However, the movies in the set are all GREAT. They are some of the best of Cary Grant and all of the other reviewers seem to completely ignore that. If you don't have two or three of the movies aside from Holiday, I would highly suggest this set-it is most certainly worth it. For those who already own three of the four previously released, I would think about how much I really loved Holiday before buying this.

A quick rundown of the movies in this set (for those who do not already know about them.):

His Girl Friday (1940)-a hilarious comedy, one of Cary Grant's best, is an update of The Front Page with Rosalind Russell as reporter Hildy who is attempting to leave Grant's newspaper to get married. Usually makers of a boxed set of films featuring one artist will put at least one bad or mediocre film in with the rest. This is not the case with this boxed set. All of the films are excellent, and there are featurettes included for all of the movies. Only His Girl Friday gets a commentary track though.

This is the Region 1 debut of Holiday on DVD. It pairs Katherine Hepburn with Cary Grant in a film that is a bit out of step with its time (1938) in that it ponders the wisdom of endlessly pursuing wealth at a time when such thoughts were considered almost un-American. Grant plays a man who becomes engaged to a woman and only later finds out she is the member of a fabulously wealthy family and that he, once a part of the family, will be expected to go to work in the family business and count money for the rest of his life. This is out of step with Grant's character's view on what he wants his future to be, but in step with his fiancee's sister's view of life played by...

Great movie finally remastered
This is a really fun, fun movie. It's not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a good combination high adventure, situation comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn't make sense? Don't worry. I'll explain.

High adventure comes from the plot: save the earth from evil by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That much is obvious. Cyberpunk explains in a way the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a situation comedy? You got it. I won't get into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you find in sitcoms. This is a good thing by the way. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these...

For those just being introduced to Jesse Stone, starting out well into the series with Innocents Lost may be slightly bewildering considering the many multiple plot threads that have carried through from the beginning. But the characters have a lot of depth from the get-go, especially Selleck's Stone, who we quickly discover has been forced out of his job as Paradise police chief and is not faring so well in the mental health department. Though the scenery of the fictional village is nothing but picturesque (Halifax, Nova Scotia, stands in for the rocky Atlantic fishing village of Paradise), the atmosphere is fairly gloomy throughout. Jesse is doing his best to continue his ascent from a depression and drinking problem that began years earlier after his divorce. But even though he's often quick with a quip and carries the charismatic appeal of Tom Selleck-ness wherever he goes, watching Innocents Lost is not the way to spend an evening if you're looking to cheer yourself up. Jesse is still friendly with his former cop colleagues (the excellent Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth), but not so much with the new chief, who's been installed primarily based on nepotism (his father-in-law is the president of the town council). He's also still doing some contract work for the Massachusetts State Police homicide squad and his pal Commander Healy (Stephen McHattie), is again palling around with the shady underworld boss Gino Fish (William Sadler), and is back talking to the grizzled psychotherapist Dr. Dix (William Devane). All these excellent supporting character actors add to the superb creative qualities of a story weaving two mysteries that Jesse becomes involved with: the suspicious death of a young girl he helped out a few years earlier, and the questionable guilt of a Boston murder suspect that Healy believes is being prosecuted in error. Jesse handily solves both cases, but the successes do not make him any happier. Neither does a casual affair with the gorgeous secretary of his pal and former nemesis Hasty Hathaway (Gloria Reuben and Saul Rubinek, both also first-rate). Even his loveable golden retriever Reggie can't snap him out of his depressive fog. There's not a lot of action, but there is a high level of dramatic integrity in the dialogue and character interaction that will make fans eager for more unpredictable exploits from Jesse Stone, both personally and professionally. --Ted Fry

Tom Selleck Is Jesse Stone--The Seventh Outing In Television's Most Introspective Crime Drama Series
Following 2010's "No Remorse," Tom Selleck returns (and shares a writing credit) for the latest installment of the Jesse Stone saga in "Innocents Lost." In this, the seventh outing, Selleck is more world weary and introspective than usual. I don't know that there has ever been a serialized crime drama that is so reliant on quiet moments and character contemplation. And, in truth, it is this moody thoughtfulness that has really made this series of movies strikingly unique in the modern television landscape. Lacking hysterics and over-the-top action set pieces, the Jesse Stone series is a quietly compelling throw-back to when stories and people mattered more than special effects. And, as always, the icing on the cake is the pitch perfect Tom Selleck who paints Jesse as both lovable and excruciatingly frustrating. I, personally, think that Stone is Selleck's best role--it is no wonder that he has revived him seven times.

"Innocents Lost" really breaks no new ground, just...
Fans deserve a medal.
Fans of this serious deserve a medal for being the most patient fans on the planet. Most fans have had to resort to DVD supplements (or the Hallmark Channel) to even catch all the installments. Luckily places like Office Depot and big chain Grocery Stores carry most of the DVD's cheap. CBS hasn't been very helpful, the first two episodes were aired in reverse order and the latest two episodes (parts 6 and 7) put on a shelf for over a year while negotiating with Tom Selleck to do the TV series BLUE BLOODS. Part 6 ultimately aired with little fanfare in a terrible time slot and Part 7 finally found a decent home (and will be released on DVD August 2nd, probably). Even if you were able to catch all of them on TV the time period between films was pretty lengthy to remember some of the plot points in the continuing story line. The 6th film, SEA CHANGE, for example, the one that sat on the shelf and then given a bad time slot, brought back guest characters from all the previous...
This series gets better with age!
Tom Selleck IS Jesse Stone! 'Innocents Lost' brought the characters together and, I believe, more relaxed in their roles, like old shoes that finally fit after a few stretches of the leather. Please, don't throw them away, because we want more Jesse Stone and Co.! Joe the Dog steals the show! Even he is beginning to show his age with a little graying around his muzzle.

The story is strong, subtle and makes you want more. Stone, now retired, is still seeking justice for a crime that will, probably, never be solved. The new Chief doesn't get much air-time, which is a good thing! Rose's character is getting stronger, but still vulnerable. She walks the line and delivers for Stone. Suits is more settled and endearing. Thankfully, for me, there is only one short phone call between 'the ex' and Jesse. The ending is oustanding!

In my opinion, "Breaking Bad," is the finest series ever produced for television. This doesn't mean that everyone who watches it, is going to like it. Denzel makes Kicking Ass Cool Again
Look, nobody has been more critical of Denzel Washington over the last few years than me, and it has nothing to do with the man's ability to command the screen. Washington is one of our great treasures, a timeless star with a seemingly endless reservoir of cool. But fulfilling roles are few and far between. For every chance he gets to star in something like Flight, he'll do three or four mediocre but money-making films like 2 Guns, Safe House, and Unstoppable. On the surface The Equalizer would seem to fit into that latter category. It's a throwback that checks all the boxes in the tortured action hero model. There's even a slow-motion walk away from a gigantic explosion. But there's also something to be said for a film that allows Denzel to do his best Charles Bronson in Death Wish, and even if there aren't many surprises The Equalizer is one kick-ass film from start to finish.

Over the past couple of years, Denzel Washington went from Hollywood A-lister to serious disappointment. "Safe House" was a disaster, "Flight" was okay at best, and movies like "Pelham 123", "Unstoppable" and "2 Guns" are a dime a dozen. There are quite a few movies like: Interstellar, Fury, Mockingjay Part 1, and many more that I am looking forward to seeing as the months progress. Today and today only, I finally got the opportunity to see The Equalizer.
Robert McCall is the primary main character here. In the movie, we see that he works at a hardware store, has a nice but notably somewhat empty apartment, and usually spends his nights at a nearby diner. Writing, directing, acting, musical score...perfection!!!!
I never write reviews, but this show is so well written, acted, and scored that I am compelled to speak out. I appreciate the fact that the writers assume you possess some level of intelligence. Details from a prior episode, or season, become relevant later (like a quick look at a photo; you know what I'm referring to). The writers assume that you're following and don't bludgeon you with an explication.

James Spader plays Red like no one else could. His phenomenal sarcastic humor never crosses the fine line between great, and over done. His facial expressions are half the dialogue in some instances. There were criticisms last season that the other characters were weak. I just didn't find that to be true. We get to know each character gradually as the larger, ongoing plots unfold. The bigger story leads you to make assumptions, and then challenges those ideas later. Not many shows pull that off over such a span of time. Music and sound effects? Perfection!

Really liked the scores

Haven't watched a network show in twenty-five years, but this caught my attention, and then held it. Saw the entire first season in two days with Netflix, then the NBC's premiere episode the next day. Complexity, characters (acting), overall design, writing, direction are all there in spades. Really liked the scores, too. A little gruesome, but you can hardly get away from it these days. Just the best TV I've seen.

Bought Season Two early for two reasons: James Spader, and the writing.

Season One caught me immediately - this show is brilliantly crafted to carry both one story per show through the titular Blacklist, as well as slowly unveiling larger plots threading throughout the show. Most of the supporting actors are extremely good as well. Megan Boone started well but a little "generic" - by the end of season one, she had grown well above the start and her chemistry with Spader is great. Harry Lennix and Alan Alda are fantastic, as usual - and introducing Peter Stormare will make this season so much better. I can't wait!

Or maybe that something is all the way there and we just can't make it out clearly enough through the haze of our gathering dread. There aren't any cheap thrills or phony scares; the menacing tone is measured and well earned and doesn't have to rely on things jumping out of the darkness. The terror often comes from what we don't see, or rather what we're afraid we're about to see.

It's a simple story about a young family--Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) and their three small children--settling into a new home. Again following classical form, there's a presence in the house that either doesn't want them there, or needs them to stay for the evilest possible reasons. When 8-year-old Dalton (Ty Simpkins) falls into an unexplained coma after a spooky encounter in the attic, Renai starts seeing the above-mentioned figures lurking around the house, sometimes none too subtly. Though the goings-on are unexplainable, no one acts crazy and Josh believes that his wife's bizarre encounters are real. Like any sensible people who believe they've taken up residence in a haunted house, they move. But the spookiness moves with them and the menace gets worse as months pass and Dalton remains unconscious without reasonable medical cause. Since things can't stay unexplained forever, the plot begins to intrude, especially when a geeky pair of paranormal investigators (Angus Sampson and writer Leigh Whannell) provide some slightly out-of-kilter comic relief. Fortunately their boss (Lin Shaye) is a bona fide psychic who's all business, and she determines that the ghosts, or demons, or whatever they are want Dalton, not the house or its other inhabitants. As the explanations continue, it's revealed that the little boy has the gift of astral projection and his spirit has left his body without really knowing it's gone. If he doesn't come back soon he'll be lost forever, taken by the strongest of the creepy phantoms, a blood-red fiend who provides the most terrifying moments of half-glimpsed horror. It turns out that Dalton inherited his gift from Dad, who has repressed his own childhood encounters with out-of-body flight, but must revisit the dark limbo where all the specters lurk in order to reunite his son's body and soul.

All this narrative sometimes gets in the way of the sinister unknowns that started the story, but there are still plenty of frights to maintain a consistently disturbing tone (and without a drop of blood or gore). Wan and Whannell preserve the less-is-more strategy to fine effect, honoring the legacy of a timeless horror style while ably stamping it with their own unique imprimatur. Whether or not you have a personal history of nightmares, there are plenty of willies to go around in the eerie confines of Insidious--an apt title for a movie whose ideas and images invade the mind with scary and spectral imagination. --Ted Fry

scariest movie i ever saw!!

this is not a review per se (because i won't describe the plot or actors--you can search that on your own) but wanted to say this is a scary movie! not the stupid hollywood kind where a bunch of teens are knocked off one by one but a very quality, well-made horror movie with lots of spooky atmosphere (what producers and directors seem to miss every time and that's what makes a scary movie). It has a haunted house, demon possession, astral progection, talented adult actors who aren't having sex and kissing all the time, and most of all the foggy spooky atmosphere that makes it scary. i have loved horror since the 60's and haven't seen too many good ones that really scare me except The Exorcist, Silence of the Lambs and some lesser known films. I actually had to turn all the lights on in the house after seeing this movie and i'm an old guy! Highly Recommended! Please make more like this one and stop with the teenagers being slashed BS. Thanks for reading!

Spectacluar! The genre done right!
I saw this in a theater when it came out...I went to a late show, and there were only a couple of others in the theater. What an experience! Scared out of my mind and intrigued at the same time. I consider myself kind of a horror/sci-fi connoisseur, and in my opinion, this is an instant classic that will be a favorite for the rest of my life.

The music. If the music doesn't creep you out, you may not be alive at all. Screeching and wailing violins...all placed in just the right parts of the film. Not since Goldsmith's 'Alien' score has there been such a perfect horror soundtrack. And even the 'Tiny Tim' song strangely works just right.

The old lady in the window and the other 'spirits'. The old lady in the window is absolute nightmare fuel. That is the kind of ghost that kept me up at night as a child. There are a variety of menacing characters about as well. At least one of them is sure to get to you.

The story. The story is very creative and...
Scariest movie I've seen in a long time - Very well done
I know I'll get butchered by some for the title, but the tension in this film was stupendous. At all the right times, in all the right places, the scares and thrills are there. Sure, it's a hodge-podge of Poltergeist, Exorcist and Paranormal Activity, but each aspect of those movies is accentuated to produce a genuinely frightening combination.

After a family of five moves into a new home, it takes little time to realize something is wrong. Items move, doors close. When one child falls into a coma and the mother hears what sounds like Vin Diesel growling in some Gaelic dialect over the baby monitor, it's time to move despite the fact the father is a disbeliever. Unlike the Jefferson's, moving on up doesn't work for this family and the frights return like ghost herpes.

While creative license was necessary to move the story along, the astral plane concept is not completely embraceable. Nonetheless, the rest of the movie hits on all cylinders. Visually there...

This Spider-Man Trilogy blu-ray box set is essentially a re-packing of previous Spider-Man blu-ray releases. If you do not yet own these films, this new set is the perfect way to own the entire trilogy and nearly all the special features that were ever released. But I do not think there is any need to repurchase these movies if you already own them because there is no new content in this set.

About the packaging... It should be noted that in this set, the discs are stored in a slim fold-out cardboard case with an outer box. So it's a nice way to save some shelf space, but those who like all their movies to be in the traditional blu-ray cases will be disappointed.

This is a review of the blu-ray set and not the movies...
...since the movies in the trilogy deserve their own reviews and have been done to death already. The low cost (even lower by $10 since I bought it) is what motivated me to buy this blu-ray disc set. I already have the special editions of all three Spiderman movies on DVD, so I wanted to see what blu-ray would bring to the home theater table, having recently bought a PS3. True, the picture quality is awesome and the audio certainly will blow you away. However, there are hardly any special features - only the third disc has any to speak of. This is an underwhelming effort, considering the massive amount of space availalble on blu-ray discs. Compare, for example, the featurettes and even mini-movies on "I Am Legend".

One thing I discovered about audio selection: if you choose PCM and your receiver is not capable of processing uncompressed signals (my Onkyo only does HDMI pass-through), all you'll get is simulated surround (e.g. Dolby ProLogic). So I ended up with 5.1...
The magic of blu ray
Anyone looking to purchase this trilogy is already a fan of the SPIDERMAN movies and wants to know how they stand up in the magic of blu ray. We all know that the original SPIDERMAN was an amzing film - a rare treat of exemplary action with superb acting for a change. Tobey Maguire and cast finally brought to the comic action movie acting ability that made the film believable. With Tobey Maguire was born Peter Parker/Spdiderman. We also know that with SPIDERMAN 2 the same cast and crew came together with a film that far surpassed the hugely succesful and critically acclaimed original to be the best in the trilogy. All that was good in the first was raised many notches. SPIDERMAN 3 was still a good film but certainly not a match for 1 and 2. Very enjoyable but a little lackluster in comparison.

Now for the blu ray test. All I can say is AMAZING. The source they are working from on the original is not as superb as the other two which makes the picture quality slightly...

Monster comedy, mostly for the kids, but fast-paced & funny enough to keep everyone entertained
Hotel Transylvania, directed by Genndy Tartakovsky from a screenplay by Peter Baynham and Robert Smigel, is an animated comedy/horror-spoof, mostly for the kids but fast-paced enough and with enough humor to keep everyone entertained for an hour and a half. It's not as smartly written as 2010's Megamind or as sophisticated and dazzling as 2011's Rango, but it is fun to watch and satisfying in a popcorn-movie kind of way. Adult fans of old horror films will like spotting some of the more obscure monsters (Brain From Planet Arous anyone?) and picking up on some references that will sail over the head of younger viewers.

The plot begins in 1895 where we find a very paternal Count Dracula (Adam Sandler) looking after his infant daughter not long after the death of his wife. Determined to keep her safe from "the humans", Dracula comes up with an idea - to create a sanctuary, a place where monsters of all kinds can come to relax and be themselves without having to constantly...
Great movie!!!

Hotel Transylvania was a really great movie I enjoyed the different point of views that it had and also the way it showed not to be scared of someone because they're different I would not hesitate to buy this movie

Hotel Transylvania - Excellent film for the whole family!
Bought this animated film for the kids but my wife and I liked it so much we remained engaged throughout the movie. Animation is excellent. Acting by everyone is fantasic. Adam Sandler does an impressive job as do the rest of the cast of voices! The story combines classic horror tale (note: nothing terrifying in the movie) with modern theme, i.e., daughter wants to explore the outside world.
Great plot and good finish.

Ultraviolet is NOT so good. Not compatible with Apple iOS devices unless you install another "App."
"Digital Copy" should just support downloading into your iTunes account like other Digital Copy films do. I realize this is due to "Sony" not wanting to compete with Apple, but I will NOT purchase any more Blu-Rays that don't support Digital Copy on iOS devices. Will just purchase the film through iTunes store and will be able to watch on Apple TV and iOS devices.

I took back the Blu-Ray (yes some retailers can be convinced to take returns)...
